hey all, question? my motor will run fine I’ll be on plane and then the motor will bog down like it’s starving for fuel for about 30 seconds then picks up speed again? replaced the ball and fuel line to the motor thought it was fixed but did it again? any thoughts?
Do you have a fuel/water separator? If so, I’ll bet it has water in it. Change it and any other fuel filter that you might have and you should be fine. I just very recently had this exact same problem and this fixed it. My boat would run wide open and then start cutting out and then would pick up and run fine. It never would shut off but I thought that it was going to. If you don’t have a fuel/water separator, then I’m not sure what could be the problem.
This is what was in my separator. You can see the water and trash in the bottom of the jar.

Also if you have an oil tank below the deck you need to check it. Pull hose loose from motor and pump some oil into a clear bottle.

drained the fuel filter. totally clear, replaced the filter on the motor. haven’t been able to test it out. will let you know as soon as I do. Thanks!
If you have an in hull tank it could be the anti-siphon valve. The ball inside of it that only lets fuel go one way will sometimes stick.
It is a cheap fix if that’s it.

thanks reeldrag! and the pic helped alot. I have a aluminum tank and not sure if the 90 degree elbow is threaded or welded in? I see welding around the base so I was a little leery about trying to take it apart. Didn’t want to crack a weld! but I may try and get a wrench on it. sounds like it could be the problem. the bogging down only happens intermittently and doesn’t last long and only at higher speeds. I’ll let you know how I make out! Thanks again. you guys are great! catch um up…Mike
turns out I don’t have an anti siphon valve, I’ve got a shut off valve. would you recommend installing an anti siphon or keep the shut off? since no anti siphon valve I’ll pull the pick up tube and check that hopefully that will fix the problem?
with any suspected fuel tank or fuel issue, you can always isolate the problem by running the motor off a portable tank with fresh fuel. This will let you know if its a motor problem or a tank issue. This way you don’t spend time and money chasing the wrong issue
well I’ve done everything simple that I know how. changed fuel line and ball, changed water separator and inline fuel filter, checked fuel pick tube in the tank, no blockage. ran the boat today ran great for 5-10 min then lost rmp’s stayed like that for about 4-5 min then ran fine again. (**()edest thing! do you think it could be a fuel pump? didn’t think if that was it would run good at times? not sure what else I can check before I have to bring it in? open to suggestions. thanks, mike
If the fuels low- Put a couple of gallons of no ethanol high octane gas and a bottle of sea foam and go run it hard.
If the fuel is not low- Put a bottle of octane booster and a bottle or two of seafoam in it and go run it hard.
If this solves the issue, put a can of sea foam in it every tank, If this doesn’t solve the issue, take it to the shop.
Don’t get the seafoam on you, or in your eye, it hurts like hell. No it wasn’t me, but it was funny once I realized dad wasn’t blind.
DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT!!!
The harder you work, the luckier you’ll get.
The first easiest thing I would do is clean the connections at the battery. I’ve had a motor bog down and the took a file from the tackle box and cleaned the connections and never had another issue. At first appearance the cables and battery didn’t even look that bad.
If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

Also make sure the fuel vent is not clogged up with dirt-dobbers or
other assorted insects/insect nests.
It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!
sounds like an ignition issue. Fuel issue should shut you down way before 4-5 minutes. If it is a johnson or and evinrude 2 stroke try tapping the power pack while the issue is occuring. Use the plastic end of a screwdriver or something similar IE: not a hammer.
well we got it figured out! not a fuel prob. the pressure valve was leaking water and flooding the lower engine I guess shorting something out. replaced damaged gasket ran boat today all was good. thanks for the input. see you on the water…Mike
