Motor Corrosion

I have a 1989 Evinrude 70hp that has lots of corrosion on the outside. What’s the best way to remove it so that I can repaint?

I would recommend sanding and the priming it. Afterwards paint it with factor authorized paint. I done this in the past and the motor turned out well. You can even put a clearcoat on as well.

unfortunately, no special secret
just alot of scraping, and hand sanding

Make sure that you get all the loose paint and corrosion off the aluminum. If not you will have more corrosion in about 6 months. Sand until the aluminum starts to get shiny. wipe with acetone or mineral spirits. paint with a couple coats of self etching primer like zinc chromate or zinc phospate. Then coat with a sandable primer and sand out the imperfections. Finish with a couple coats of factory color.

only thing I will disagree with with hairball on is, I wouldnt use mineral spirits. it leaves alot of residue behind that will make it hard for the primer to stick to.
acetone is good, and we use it alot, but I have found denatured alcohol works just as good, and its cheaper

Well taken Chris V, I should have been more specific. I too use acetone before laying down primer. I will use mineral spirits when touching up the top coat because I can wipe a larger area down and not worry about having the existing paint damaged like with acetone. You just have to let mineral spirits dry all the way before painting.
