My boat freaked out yesterday. While driving, an alarm sounding thing went off and the motor slowed down on its own. I didnt even know my boat had an alarm on it so the whole scenario was quite shocking. So I checked out the motor and noticed it wasnt peeing and figured this was the problem. Perhaps the alarm was to inform me the motor was over heating? It is a 1994 Yamaha 75hp 2 stroke. I got the thing for free in January (hadnt been run in 4 years) and took it to a mechanic who rebuilt the carb and did other various things to get it running. I has been running smoothly since then, and I’ve probably put 20-30 hours on in with no problems. But now I’m thinking there is more work that should have been done originally to get it back up to par. Is checking/replacing the water pump something I can do myself? I’ve seem some videos on youtube, but this is a pretty old motor and I have practically no mechanic experience. I would hate to make things worse… Any idea how much this kind of thing would cost at a shop?
Any advice is very appreciated.
Before you spend the money replacing the pump or even having a professional look at it, just look for any obstruction if u havent already. I had the same problem with my 2000 yami 70 two stroke and when I looked in the hole I found dried mud. Took off the cowling removed the rubber tube and used a straightened paper clip to clean out the hole and tube. All there was to it, problem solved took 10 min. Hope it works out as simply for u!

My yamaha pee hole gets a bees nest in it a few times a year so check that , but if your alarm went off you have other problems. Id do an impeller change and a quick compression check to make sure nothing got hurt, chances are you will be on the water in no time
JSadler is correct.
If the alarm went off it isn’t because the pee-hole is stopped up.
Pee-hole is only there for a visual aid that the water pump is pumping.
Check with your mechanic to see if he replace the impeller or the whole pump assy, or if he even replaced anything in the lower unit.
If the motor sat for 4 years it could have some crud ( or maybe even pieces of the old water pump ) that has broken loose and stopped up the water port.
I was given a motor several years ago that had sat for a while. The previous owner tried to “get it running” on his own. Long story short…the impeller disintegrated when he got the motor to fire up and little pieces made their way all through the water passages. Some were lodged in the tube from the water pump to the block. I had to pull the block and do a total cleaning. Motor runs slick as snail-snot now.
I’ve got the same engine and the dirt daubers love to build nests in the pee tube. I try to remember to stick a piece of tape over the hole.
As said above though, that won’t make the alarm go off. The engine has alarms for over heat and low oil. When either go off there is an rpm limiter that kicks in to keep you from cooking the engine. you almost certainly have a bad water pump impeller. It’s simple to change it yourself, about a one hour job. I replace mine once a year. The rebuild kit is only about $70.

Thanks for the replies everyone, very helpful. I’ve checked the rubber tube for a stoppage and it seems to be clear. I will check with my mechanic and see if he did anything with the water pump. Larry, since you’ve got the same motor, do you know where can I find the replacement kit?
Might want to check your thermostats – mine was still peeing really poorly once I changed the impeller, and it turned out that they were filled with crud and one was borderline seized shut.
seels…chas marine…hankel…they usually have em in stock or can get em overnight…just replaced mine on my 25 and my buddys 250…both were fairly easy with a lil patience and youtube!! along with the other good replies hope this helps!
i replaced mine with no problem on two different boats, a 35 2 stroke evinrude and a 100 4 stroke Yamaha i found it simple, i ordered both from boats.net and used there diagram to work me through it. this link is to your motor- and what you would be getting into ( read from top to bottom as that’s how you pull it off: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/1994/C75TLRS/LOWER%20CASING%20DRIVE%201/parts.html the main part is #24 the impeller i all ways bought all the gaskets and stuff also.
