Ive had my boat for 3 yrs and have always used YamaLube.I hate the cost of the oil.Is there any difference between high dollar yamaha oil and what I put in my truck.Synthetic blend in yamaha oil I guess is the difference.Anybody run regular motor oil in there 4 stroke Yamahas?
Don’t do it. The marine lubes have special agents in them for the environment and the high revolution/heat. I use Amsoil full synthetic Marine 10W30 and change it myself.

Better to pay a little more on the maintenance side than to go cheap and pay much more later with a break down or worse.

Yep, don’t do it. A boat is not a truck, and you shouldn’t put airplane oil in your truck either:wink:

The Yamaha oil doesn’t have the best reputation, there was a whole thread on HT a while back that had some pretty good info about it.That being said, the harbor taxi had 6800 hours on it when they sold the 150’s that wee on it, they ran like a top. I use the Sierra 4SW engine oil on oil changes with good luck. I called Shell oil and asked them about running Rotella oil in an outboard 4 stroke. They couldn’t give me a reason why not, but they did say they haven’t tested it in an outboard. I’ll have to stand with what they told me, as long as you meet the API code and viscosity that the engine manufacture recommends, you should be fine. That being said if you are worried about it, use what the factory recommends.
for warranty purposes, Yamaha requires a FC-W rated oil
