Motor ran hot

Whent for a ride with a neighbor and his 140 evinrude over heating alarm goes off. This thing is running great with a strong pee stream and gets the alarm. Stopped the boat and pulled the cowling off and sure enough it is hot. Waited about 45 minutes and cranked it back up. Strong pee stream and run back to landing. Man goes to a shop and someone tells him to pull thermostat and run without it. He tried it again today and the pee stream is just a trickle. I took a peek today and there are hoses coming from everywhere. Does anybody know if the 140 has more than 1 t stat? I think it is around an 89 - 90 model. Found a hose coming from top port running across top of engine to pee tube. A big hose from t stat runs forward on starboard side and down to some kind of connection and then back to outlet. Also has a small hose on starboard lower cylinder that runs to outlet. I suggested pulling hoses loose and starting engin to see if water free flows from all connections. Didn’t run in any shallow water to pick up trash. Any other ideas? Water pump assy is the next step.

That engine should have 2 thermostats. They are located at the top rear on each side. Four 3/8" bolts hold each on. Some t’stats have a screw on gasket that can be removed and used to seal the cover without the t’stst. If you have removed them and are still running hot; there is stoppage or the puimp is shot. Remove both t’stats covers and use a water hose to flush from one side to the other. Also, put on earmuffs and flush up with engine running and covers off. If this does not solve any stopage problems; then a new water pump is next in line. Use care and liberal grease replacing the lower unit when lining up the pump gasket and water tube as the gasket can bind and create another stopage. Hope this helps. George
