Motor selection for new boat

When it comes to boat motors I’ve had good luck with every brand other than a Force.

My Son is mulling a new boat it comes standard with a yamaha 115 but you can upgrade to a 150 for a couple thousand more. There is also an option for a 140 suzuki @ only a hundred or so more than the 115. All 4 strokes.

I’ve heard resale is better on the yamaha but is there really any down side to the suzuki?

“If Bruce Jenner can keep his wiener and be called a woman, I can keep my firearms and be considered disarmed.”

Yamy resale is better but the cost more too so kind of a wash. I would go with the one that has the best warranty.

I have never once had a customer say “I wish I would have bought the smaller motor”
regularly I hear the opposite
cant go wrong with a yamaha

If it is anything like most boats sold standard today with a 115, it needs a 150. The 115 Yamaha is a little weak for a 115 IMO, but the 150 is a phenomenal engine. 17’ boat, I think a 115 would be fine, 18’ or larger, 150 minimum.

remember the warranty is only as good as the the dealer you bought it from! Go with the larger motor,it’s my experance the boat will handle better and use less fuel!

Not only would the larger engine probably use less fuel, it won’t be working nearly as hard to keep you at cruising speed and will last longer. With a marginal HP engine people tend to run them wide open all the time.

Thanks for all the replies!

for the money difference anyone recommend the 140 suzuki? The 140 suzuki is about the same money as the 115 yammaha. the 150 yammaha is a couple of grand different.

going with the bigger option just wondering if the price difference between the two was worth sticking with the yamaha.

Will have to question warranty on both.

Fred, I,ve had 4 Yamaha 4 strokes. 2, 115’s that were on a boat I sold a year ago, and 2, 150’s. Have not had a single problem with any of them. Well, other than the 150 that came on a new Bay Scout I purchased in 06.

Yamaha had a balancer issue that, when it would fail, would cause major issues as the oil pump would suck up the pieces and blow engine. Symptoms were a whistling noise that mine seemed to develop and Yamaha paid for the replacement prior to failure and AFTER warranty had expired by several months. Not even a debate with their customer service about this repair.

Check on warranty, but keep in mind where he will need to take it for service, if needed.

If I didn’t have a Yammy, my second choice would be a Zuke.

BTW, I have a little fiberglass jonboat project that I am wrapping up and have already bought a new 20hp Yamaha to go on it as they had a sale going on that ended June 15th I believe. Taking boat to dealer to have mounted in the next week or so.

Also, keep in mind that if he sees a deal online for a Yamaha brand new for appears to be a deal, not so much. Motor will not come with a prop and still has to be delivered to a dealer to mount and do service check and that dealer won’t do that for free. I almost did that until I dug into it with the 20.

Sorry for going beyond the simple upgrade/brand cost. Hoping the info provided will help in decision.

i have a suzy 140, runs great.

It is an excellent motor. I dont think personally I could justify thousands between it and a 150 yammy

Don’t doubt that at all. I fish with a couple guys offshore that one has twin 150’s and the other 250’s. no issues thus far.

ChrisV on here has mentioned corrosion issues in the Zukes, I believe. Maybe he will chime in. That would be something to consider if in the salt often.

Chris said in another post that there is a wide horsepower range difference on a dyno tester between a 140 Suzuki and a 150 Yamaha. Suzuki was over rated, tested in the 130’s and the Yamaha was under rated, tested in the 160’s.

What kind and size of boat it going on?

That’s something I was interested about. Had a few “glitter” boats and it was very common back in the day to underrate an engine. I’d say the Johnson 175 Fast Strike & GT 150 could have been top of the list.

I believe by modern law an engine can only be within 10%+/- of rated power.

Edit: Thanks again for all the replies. Can never have enough information when making a purchase!

I thought it was a KW FS189. That was the boat I was looking at. A 115 Yammie is horrible on that boat. But a lot are sold with it because it keeps it in a certain price range. That boat is a totally different boat with the Yamaha 150. Or even a Mercury 150, or ETEC 150. That Yamaha 115 is heavy, small displacement, on the - side of 115. Even the Mercury 115 would outperform that on that hull.

The 150 Yammie was a $2,450 option on that boat when I was looking 2 years ago. Personally I would go with the Yamaha 150, Suzuki 150, or Mercury 150. Depending which I could get the better deal on, which had a better warranty, and which cost the least to maintain. Based on all that, it would probably go to the Zuk or Merc.

I’m in the market for a used boat and wouldn’t consider one with a Suzuki on the back. Something to consider when it is time to move up.

Dark Star

I won’t go into brands, I have a Yamaha but I do know if you go with one of those smaller motors you will be sorry. The 115 will push that boat ok but will be sluggish and suck fuel. I don’t believe the 140 will perform much better. The 150 will completely change that boat relative to the others. Get the 150, money well spent.
