So on a 2001 Yamaha HPDI 200 my motor trim on my throttle will not lift the engine. It will however go down. I can hear the motor running when going down but only clicks at the throttle when switched to the up position. Both the up and down trim work on the engine itself. I looked on line a bit but only found out a little info about a relay switch on the engine it self. Sorry if question has been posted before I tried to do a search of the site and it turned up nothing. Any help appreciated.
It sounds like the switch went bad at the handle.
Probably switch on throttle,if it was relay I don’t believe it would work with the switch on the motor
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
there is also a sensor that will not allow you to lift the engine too high with the handle(so that you dont cavitate the motor while running). if that sensor is bad or mis-adjusted, it will not allow you to trim up with the handle control
Yeah, will try and look at it in the next couple of days. Mechanic do you know where that sensor is? Is it in the handle? or on the engine? Looks like I am going to have to get a service manual. Any ideas where to get one under $100.00?
the switch on the motor will do exactly what the switch on the handle does.
all sensors that effect the handle switch have the same effect on the pan switch.
either the wire or the switch at the handle has a fault.
under the control box, there are 3 wires red, blue, and green.
they are connected to the main engine wiring harness with 3 bullet connectors.
unplug them.
on the motor side of the harness, touch the red wire to the blue wire, and the trim should go up.
touch the red wire to the green and it should go down.
if this works, you need a new switch, or you have a broken wire on the switch harness.
if it does not work, you have a problem in the main harness

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING
Same thing happened on my Stratos. The red lead was broken inside the handle at the bottom. Over the 20 years of use the red lead broke due to rubbing against handle housing.

thanks guys for the responses. Hopefully it is only the switch that is bad. What does the control box look like? is it on the Port side of the engine or the starboard side? How hard is it to replace the switch in the handle?

Is this something new? I’ve never had a boat that you could not bring the engine completely out of the water with it running or not using the throttle trim switch. I know under a full load a trim pump will only lift so far as it will hit the second stage.
Jonny, follow Chris’s advice. As good as it gets for narrowing down the problem. Very straight forward.
“If Bruce Jenner can keep his wiener and be called a woman, I can keep my firearms and be considered disarmed.”
Yeah Fred I have never heard of that before either. I thought they would all keep lifting the motor as long as you mashed down the switch. Again thanks guys for the advice I hope to have time soon to work on it.
The tilt sensor is on inboard motors. ive been working on a couple the last week so i was in that mind set, sorry. i dont think ive seen that setup on an outboard.
have you had a chance to find out what the problem was?
I haven’t been a able to get to the boat yet. Kids and wife are keeping me busy. Hopefully soon Will let you now what I find out.
Keep it simple, on a 2001 boat I’ll bet the trim wires simply broke inside the throttle. They constantly flex back and forth as you work the throttle, after 17 years they wore out and broke. I’ve replaced the switch on my 1997 boat this year, my 2000 boat a couple of yrs ago and helped my buddy replace his on his 2001 a couple of months ago. Found the switch assembly part on line, took the throttle handle apart (all were Johnson/OMC)and plug and play. Part was maybe $70.
So ended up being just the contacts inside the throttle handle. I just took it apart used some sand paper on the two contacts and presto it works again! I took a video of it I will try and post it to youtube. Very happy I could fix it in less than 15 min and it cost nothing.
