Yesterday as I was pulling my boat onto my trailer I noticed when raising the motor it was very slow to come up. When I pulled the truck up to look at the motor, I noticed an O-Ring that broke on one of the trim cylinders that moves the motor up and down. Know, the motor will not go up or down. Has anyone else run into this problem, and if so is it an expensive fix? Thanks for any advise or help.

The trim cylinder will have to be rebuilt or replaced, depending on condition/corrosion. Probably a couple hundred $. You haven’t told us what size or brand of engine you have, that makes it hard to guess that price question. Is it the 90 Yamaha in your signature?
That engine has a bleeder valve screw on the starboard side that will relieve hydraulic trim pressure and lower the engine, if you need to lower it. It ain’t going back up until you fix it.

those are called wiper seals
there are 3 of them
1 on each of the 2 trim rams and 1 on the tilt ram
parts and labor is going to be about $350-375
were you in fresh or salt water when this happened?
if salt, you need to do something with it immediately as you likely got saltwater in the system from the leaking seal.
if you open the manual release screw, you can lift the motor up, by using steady slow upward pressure. best accomplished with 2 strong backed friends.

Chris, I was in salt water when this happened so I want to get this fixed ASAP. Does this take long to fix?
