Motor trouble on the way to Rockville

After spending the weekend offshore a week ago with no sign of trouble I idled out of the wappoo cut saturday morning with 10 people on my boat heading towards Rockville.

I did notice that my Yamaha 200 didn’t sound right. Upon entering the Stono I proceeded to put the hammer down only to continue idling. I had absolutely no power.

I trimmed the motor up to inspect the prop. Nothing caught in the prop so I trimmed it back down and tried again and just like that we shot off but could only get about 3500 rmps and continued losing power until I finally had to come to a stop, shut the motor off, trim it up, and start again. Did this all the way down and all the way back.

Sunday I changed my fuel water separator and yesterday I went back down to the Wappoo and tried again and she ran like a top.

Moral of the story change your fuel water separator if it has been over a year. Mine is the Racor with the clear bowl but apparently I don’t check it and drain it enough…

I do not have a racor, but I change my filter every service (100 hrs.). Of course, that isn’t but 2 to 3 months or so for me…

EDIT: Sorry you had the trouble, but glad you found the problem and it was simple!!

Really need to change it twice a year now with all the ethanol in the gas. I actually changed mine 3x last year. I use to do it every 100 hours which is about a year for me, but now I do it 2-3 times a year regardless of the hours. Ethanol turns into water and clogs those bad boys up a lit quicker in my opinion. I also use a 10 micron now. Not worth the risk for a $20 filter. Just my .02.

also I carry a spare filter too

From reds to marlin you got it.

Very true!! I guess that I change mine between 3 & 5 times a year. I don’t use a racor because I can’t see that I would really need one as often as I use my boat and how often I change out my filter. That may be bad logic, but it has worked so far for the first 1350 hours anyway…
