Happy holidays everyone! Normally, I’m fishing quite a bit during my Christmas vacation, but power plant issues have put the kibosh on that. The boat is at Mid-Carolina, and they don’t return to work until Tuesday.
At the end of the tournament day on the 16th, we were running just fine until the motor choked down to a halt near Big Mans. It restarted
and would shut down like it was fuel-starved. With Colby lying on the back deck pumping the bulb, we limped back in to Acapulco for weigh-in. On that Sunday, I removed the fuel water separator which was full of water, rigged directly from the tank to motor, and headed to the lake. There, it never shut down but I could tell it was down a cylinder. I usually get 5200 on the tac and 42-45 mph wide open. However, the best I could get was 4500 and 36 mph. Therefore, I was hoping that a new set of plugs would fix the problem. Wrong.
The Friday before Christmas, I changed the plugs. 5 of the six looked fine, but 1 was black with the electrode bent shut. Nonetheless, I took it back to the lake with the same results then dropped it at the shop.
Here’s hoping I haven’t completely lost a cylinder. The Yammy is 31 years old and only worth $2275. However, I can have no complaints. If the cost of repair is more than that figure, I’ll be motor and loan shopping. I’ve already got my eye on a new power plant.
Sorry to be long-winded, but that should explain why I haven’t posted any reports lately.
Sorry to hear about your motor problems and do not sound good. Bad week I am down also with no reverse. I hope just need adjusting. Just a clicking sound trying to engage.
Sorry to hear about your troubles Fog. Spoon told me what happened. I was going to try and get you and Spoon out on Saturday on my boat if you are available but I never heard anything back if it would work, Now I’m getting nervous my wife is stacking up a to do list.
Good luck with the motor Fog…but holy cow, even if you have to replace it you sure got your $$$ worth out of that motor. 31 years, sheesh that’s gotta be some kind of record!!! In spite of this challenge, have a safe and prosperous new year!!

That sucks Fogman. Good luck @ Mid carolina. I would’ve suggested you to take it anywhere else other than there. They are by far the worst boat mechanics in the Midlands. I’ve had 2 things done to my Sea Hunt I just sold and it took 6 trips there for the 2 separate instances. The last time it was there I had the raw water pump repaired and picked it up with a screw in the tire, the tire flat and 2, yes I said TWO, broken battery switches. Completely shattered. They asked me if I wanted to leave it with them to fix them. I said no, I wouldn’t dare. I’m far from mechanically inclined but I (() sure fixed them myself. They (() near killed a buddy of mine when the work they did caused him to have no steering at full plane and lost control of his boat.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the condolences and fishing invites I have received. Mechanic, I appreciate your willingness to talk and give insights even though we only know each other through what we’ve posted here. When I get up and running again, it would be my pleasure to have you onboard the Hardcore Xpress for a day of striper fishing.
I’ve decided to go with the SHO VMAX 175. I’m going to pick up the boat tomorrow after work and talk to a salesman. I’ve done some shopping. If they can get right with the money, the rig may not leave there until the new motor is hung and I hand them the check. Otherwise, I’ll take my time. Didn’t want another payment yet, but it is what it is. We’ll be fine.
no problem James. Sorry there wasnt much we could do on the ole yammy, but youll enjoy that new SHO. and you just let me know when, once it warms up a little
