Motor Won't Run

Hey all. I’ve got a 2001 Yamaha OX66 250 horse two stroke. Yesterday, we had the boat on Moultrie to do some swimming and tubing. We got the boat in the shallows, shut it down, I raised the motor to keep it from hitting the bottom. It sat that way for about 2 hours. The time came to get going home to enjoy a nice dinner downtown. I put the motor back in the water, started the motor up, put it in gear with kids in tow in the tube. Went about 300 yards at about 6 knots while we were securing the rest of the boat down and the motor stopped. Tried for the next 1.5 hours to start it with no success. Called for a tow, and kept trying to start it; no go. Got towed, and kept trying to start it with no success. So for about 3 hours, it wouldn’t restart.

On about every third or forth attempt, the engine would turn over, go for a few revolutions, and stop. Then nothing would happen except for the starter engaging for the next few tries.

I removed the case, and removed my spark plug leads, checked the fuel filter, looked at the fuel lines. I tried starting it in a high rpm throttle setting, I tried in reverse (all with a disengaged prop btw) and everything in the middle. We even prayed over the motor.

So, I have to get the motor looked at and I’ve used Hanckel before with great success. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good outboard guy or marine shop up in the Summerville area to get it looked at today. We had plans to take the boat to NC on Saturday for a week and I really want to have it fixed before then.

Needless to say, we did not have a nice dinner downtown.

Thanks.

Did the safety lanyard cord accidently fall off while you were putting stuff away?

Thanks guys. No, the safety lanyard was on. Having made that mistake once before, it was the first thing I checked. LOL!!

I’ve made a bunch of calls and it seems that I have a fuel flow issue, most likely. Either the main pump, or one of three smaller pumps in the fuel system on my motor. So, I’m taking it tomorrow to get looked at with Berkeley Outdoors, from our good CF.com friend Circle Hook.

Thanks again.

Took the boat up to Berkeley Outdoors, to Circlehook and company.

They ran a full check on it and turns out I had a loose battery connection. Apparently, unlike a car motor, my outboard requires a battery connection to run. The compression was good, fuel pressure good, and everything else they checked. It only cost me the price of diagnostic check to get it fixed.

Thanks to the guys up there for doing a fast and stellar job.

Glad to hear of a good outcome. Doesn’t happen that often. Enjoy the wknd!
