Motor won't stay running!

I just replaced the fuel pump and ignition coil on my 2001 25hp yamaha. After changing the ignition coil it will now fire up for about a half second and then cut off. It has been sitting out for about a month so changed out the fuel. I even tried disconnecting the kill switch and swapped out the spark plugs…still doing the same thing. Could it be a carb issue? I don’t have a fuel water seperator so not sure what the heck is going on!!!

Based upon my recently experience with the F150 - it’s the kill switch.

However, I used to have an F40. Had the carbs rebuilt. When it was put back together, the mechanic put the throttle linkage on upside down. It ran briefly, then bound and snapped loose. This prevented the motor from running. So, my fist guess is to check the linkage to make sure they were reinstalled correctly. It sounds like you have not rebuilt the carbs. If not, it’s probably wise to do that as well.

Sounds like you are not getting fuel. Because you just replaced the fuel pump my guess is your prob is based around that. Make sure the new pump is working properly and that the fuel lines are connected to the correct ports. If the old pump was working good enough I would reinstall it to prove out the issues is or is not the pump.

Just so we’re straight.
You said you replaced the fuel pump and coil.
You said after the coil replacement it won’t run but only fire and die.
Which did you do first and what were the results?
Was the motor running before replacement of either or both parts, and how was it acting when it ran.
The motor only requires three things to be able to run and you have affected two of those so your problem may only be related to one…however; especially now, there may be a problem with both. We need more information.
I’m leaning toward the fuel but since you replaced the coil, who knows.

Go get one of these and check the fire to your plugs. That will at least eliminate or prove the coil is firing.

I checked the plugs and they are getting spark. I replaced the fuel pump about a month ago and it was running fine, so don’t think it is that. The ignition coil failed the day after I replaced the fuel pump and I finally got around to replacing it yesterday. I was reading online that just disconnecting my kill switch connections may not have bypassed it depending on what type of kill switch I have. So I will try the other bypassing option to see if it is that. If that doesn’t do it I may just take it to the shop!

I had trouble with mine flooding itself whenever the tank got hot. Try starting it at half throttle.

While replacing the coil and checking the plugs, you didn’t cross the wires by chance? #1 wire on #2 plug.

Checked to make sure it was hooked up properly and looks to be fine. Just going to take her to the shop and hope its a simple fix!
