Moultrie/Diversion Canal Catfish reports

Will be in the lake this weekend. Can anyone report on the catfish action in the area right now? where are they catching them at and what are they eating? I will update once I know something, any other input would be helpful as well.

I can’t say whether they are biting or not, I’d like to know myself. But I suggest you bring some sabiki rigs and pull up some herring for bait, or just buy it. If you can net up some of the river mullet, those also work great. Sometimes around Arrowhead landing you can see the river mullet schooling and you can catch them on bobbers with tiny hooks and redworms.

Moral judgment under girds the entire structure of laws and is necessary for the rational structure of any significant statute. The idea that our laws can stand independent of moral foundation is senseless.----- Albert Mohler.

Thanks for the info, will see what I can do. I will run a trotline this weekend as well as rod fish. Will let you know what happens.

Didnt do too good this weekend, but I think using old bail that had been thawed out and refrozen a few times bit me in the butt… put out trotline friday evening, baited with beef heart (recomended to me last year by someone who runs trotlines for a living) but didnt get a single fish. All bait was still on the hooks Saturday morning. Again, i bought the beef heart a year ago and it was thawed and refrozed a few times because I took with me each time to the lake, but didnt get my lines out until this past weekend. I rebaited with shrimp and cut herring that I had used for a few previous fishing trips again with no luck. I went to Blacks Fish Camp and bought fresh herring and rebaited Saturday evening. We checked it a few hours later to find one cat about 10 pounds and a bunch of empty hooks as well ad a tangled line. I suspect some a-hole pulled the line and checked it for me because the end weights (80lbs) were a lot closer together than I left them. After fixing and rebaiting with fresh herring, returned Sunday morning to a 25lb, 15lb and 5lb cats and a turtle, so not a flop…

Fished the Diversion Saturday and didnt have much luck. They were running a ton of water through and it was hard staying on the bottom. Bad luck Saturday probably had something to do with bad bait too… Seems catfish only like fresh bait…

If you still want to use that beef heart and want it to work, cut into bait size chunks and soak it in some cod liver oil. Let it marinate overnight in an air tight container (like a disposable tupperware container) in your refrigerator.

You can find cod liver oil in the vitamin section in most stores, but CVS has bigger bottles of the pure stuff.

Soaking shrimp in cod liver oil is one of my go-to baits for catfish if I don’t want to mess with live bait. You can soak pretty much anything in cod liver oil and catch cats, especially channel cats. The oil puts out a strong smelling scent trail that brings them in from far and wide.

I will give that a try. I am always looking to expand my catfishing arsonal… How messy is the cod liver oil when handling it?

It’s pretty messy. I always put the bait on the hook over the water. I take a small bottle of soap and a couple rags with me when I’m using “marinated” bait. The soap is for when I’m about to eat or heading back to the landing. Don’t let it get on the deck of the boat. It is oil, so it is slippery.

The diversion canal has been producing pretty good lately, due to the higher flows through there.

Yeah, last Saturday, they were trucking water through… GPS was showing us moving 1.9mph with the flow against a good breeze… Seems like everytime I hit the Diversion the last few times, either the wind is blowing against the flow or with it, slowing down the drift of speeding it up…Cant seem to get it just right…
