Mountains of western North Carolina

Did some fishing last week on the Tuckasagee River and had a blast catching 10-14 inch fish. Learned alot in just a few days. YOU NEED WADERS was the first lesson I learned. After getting skunked the first day we went back again with the right fly patterns and gear and had a great day on the fly. Egg Patterns and San Juan worms were the hatch* of choice. Felt like Hoppy and Earlytimes were in the river with me though, got scouted pretty quickly and covered up after I went 8 for 8 at one stretch. Good times.

Et I think you have a twin living off of highway 107 on EARLY TIMES ROAD. Tried to get a picture for you but failed.

IF any of you enjoy that type of thing the season is on fire supposedly. The Davidson River has some nice fish in it. Unfortunatley we did not fish this river. Their is a fly shop at the foot of the Pisgah forest that has private land for you to fish on. $90 for a half day unguided trip.

He took the bait like a jugbelly redfish on an olive and white clouser.

Davidson River Outfitters is the shop I think you’re talking about. They’re good people. Also their little private water thing for $90 is a great deal because they only let a certain number of people on the water daily (so the fish don’t get overly pressured).

Jeez, you traveled all that way and still couldn’t get anything over 15 inches…bummer.

The Tuck is a great trout fishery and DRO is a great shop for gear and info. There are some huge fish on that private water that you are talking about.

The Ole Spaghetti and Meatball combo! Thats works well but can’t say there is any skill in fishing with egg patterns and San Juan worms! Any dry fly action going on? Try hitting the Holston river. Its a bit of a drive but is a great fishery.

IS there any skill involved in most fishing? I thought it was mostly just luck.

our family has a place in saluda n.c. close to the green river. have not broken out the longrod on them yet but have a blast with the 4# spinning outfit and the berkley gulp earthworm pattern. good fun right there.

I went up there about a half dozen times without ever being able to fish. The last time I got the chance and am glad I did. Even If I was cheating by using the patterns I chose. All I did was guide scout one of the drifters coming thru, asked them what they were using and they said "egg patterns" so I started using them as well. I need to walk before I start running so to speak. Its funstuff and if you can find somewhere close that holds fish its even better. The places we fished were about 40 minutes from the cabin which made it hard to pull off with the ladies wanting to go hiking and see the waterfalls.

if you ever end up in saluda let me know. i found some very nice hatchery supported water on the green river that has been very productive. wading those cold streams on a hot summer day is as good as it gets.

Hope to try some of the mountain streams closer to home this year. Would Brevard be a good central place to stay. Also wonder how long a drive from Beaufort to the Brevard area. Either that or flying into Ashville and renting a car.

What is chiefly needed is skill rather than machinery.

S1tpilot. Brevard is a little over 4 hr from Charleston. Easy drive. That would be a good spot to stay if you want to fish the Pisgah area- you have the davidson and other good spots there.

I’ll be camping along Cantrell Creek and South Mills River this weekend. Anyone know what I might expect up there? I’ve never been there and don’t know how big the water is and if they hold trout. I won’t have much time on the water, so a couple of fly suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
SeaLevelPete

Not sure what the DH situation is in NC but if you’re on the S. Mills I know the North Mills is right next door. I’ve had some pretty good days over there in the early spring.

Cheers,

Chris

Also you might want to check out Davidson River Outfitters (they’re right outside Pisgah, practically on the Davidson) for the most up to date conditions and flies to use.
