I am putting a set of Taco Top-gun mounts on my “new-to-me” boat.
I have a walk-around with the fiberglass hard-top.
Instructions say to bolt directly to the fiberglass with a backing of starboard. Is this how everyone else’s is done? I was thinking I needed a aluminum plate welded in place and bolt to it. Will the fiberglass hold on it’s own?
Poles will be 1-1/8" by 15’
I would certainly use aluminum backing plates for that.

You don’t want to find out that the fiberglass was not strong enough by ripping a big chunk of it loose. If the hard top was not explicitly designed to carry that load, I’d do as you suggest. Find someone to add the appropriate structure.

Welded in alum. plates would probably be the best choice. That way you’re not depending on just the fiberglass. If you need someone to weld the plates in, let me know. I can get weld in alum. extrusion (oval extruded tube) with holes pre drilled for your Top Guns.

Bob,
I have a couple of other things to add first, and I’ll get with you about fabbing a backing plate. Should be simple enough. Thanks everyone.
as a dealer I would NOT install a set of outriggers into a fiberglass top without a welded in aluminum plate
Happy Bob, sent you an email a week or two back about a radar arch. Did you get it?
