Anyone have their’s mounted inside? My brother’s Key West has it mounted on the inside and seems to do well, just wondering if its a hard installation, seems like it picks up better at high speed being inside.
If it is instaled properly it will work well! Make sure it is mounted in an epoxiy bed with no air bubbles and not on a double bottom it is best in a sump.
Thru the years I’ve tried them all, bought a h-bird si couple years
back and also decided to go with a thru hull trans ,best choice
I’ve ever made , clear screen at all speeds, no snow or distortion
in screen from anything. It’s a little more trouble to install
but worth every minute and nickel imo.

I’ve also used them all, and as in everything there are trade offs. Thru-hull transducers by far give the best picture, sensitivity and resolution. But I have sheared off a number of them hitting boards, logs, oysters, sand and unknown objects. “Capt. there sure is a lot of water in the cabin, is this normal?” If you do go with a thru-hull don’t use a plastic one, get a solid bronze. They can shear off too but not as easy.
Because of that, I mount mine inside the hull. It does lose some resolution and sensitivity, but it’s a small boat and doesn’t fish in deep water very often. It needs to be epoxied to bare, clean and un-cored solid fiberglass. It will not work through a wood or foam core hull.
Mine works well enough to mark shrimp in 60’ holes, marks bottom fish real good up to about 200’, then gets real fuzzy and loses the bottom completely at about 400’. But I mostly fish inshore, so it’s good enough and I can’t bust it on an oyster mound.
I’ve installed a half dozen or so inside the hull and they all worked, just not quite as good. Make sure there is solid glass between transducer and water. Clean it good, sand it, clean it again with acetone. Then I use a plastic container like a butter or sour cream container as a mold. Cut out the bottom and tape it down with duct tape. Pour a little thickened epoxy in the mold, bed the transducer in it and work out any air bubbles, then pour some more thickened epoxy around it. Remove mold when cured. It ends up looking like a hockey puck with a wire sticking out, and it is forever one with the hull skin. Which makes me think that maybe the entire hull is acting like the transducer face? I don’t know, but it works.
If most of my fishing was in deep offshore water I would use a bronze thru-hull, but for what I do now the in hull mount works fine.

The last 3 boats I’ve built were all primarily inshore boats and I installed the transducers inside the hull on all 3. I had planned for them in advance because the hull is cored with 1/2" mahogany plywood.
They have to go in the bilge sump because the rest of the hull has 6" of foam in it. So I plan for and cut out for the transducers early in the builds.
I taper the edges and tack up a plastic covered mold underneath.
Make a bunch of fiberglass circles
Lay them in there and squeeze out the air bubbles
Keep on overlapping
The transducers work pretty good through the solid glass core.
I’ll find some pictures of the inside installation too.

Philadelphia cream cheese mold:smiley: I tinted the epoxy to match the sump color. With mold removed it’s just a solid epoxy puck.

Cracker, I was hoping you would help. Boat is Bulls Bay 2200, toured the facility and had ever step shown and explained that was used in making my boat, and the ducer can go inside. Thanks so much for the detailed instructions, it is truly appreciated!

HAVE YOU TRIED USING THE BRONZE FLSUH MOUNT THRU-HULL?
I HAVE INSTALLED A NUMBER OF THEM, AND THEY HAVE VERY LITTLE EXTERIOR PROFILE,THEREFORE IT WOULD BE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SHEAR ONE OFF.
PS, KIDS PLAY-DO MAKES A PERFECT MOLD TO POUR EPOXY INTO IF YOU DO GO SHOOT-THRU

No I have not and that may be the best option, if not the least expensive. Like I said, this works pretty good for inshore and near shore use, but not so good in deep water.
10-4 on the Play Dough mold. I’ve used it too, very good for some applications. Have to cover it in plastic wrap or the epoxy will stick to it.

look at this

I do
I’m sure that works great and it won’t shear off, but I’m not spending $1,200 on a transducer for an inshore fishing boat either. Mine mounted inside the hull does everything I need it to do for a lot less money. But to each their own needs, wants and budgets God bless the rich people, they keep us working people working

I can’t spend any extra on transducer, max dept I will fish is 90’ on a glass smooth day,so I think the ducer that comes with the unit will work. Thanks again for all the input!

A thru-hull and 90ft, you can see their gills moving!
Furuno 585, Airmar tilted thru-hull and I love it!

im not sure what that specific transducer is, but we don’t spend $1200 on a transducer either.
the ones we use are about $250
I used that because it was a good picture to represent what we use
we have also used the plastic version of the same style and they are only about $100

It’s directly from the link you posted above. It shows $1149.00.

yeah, that was a 1kw
we don’t use those for inshore boats
this is more like it for the bronze

One more question, can I mount the transducer that comes with a Garmin echoMap 54dv inside the boat? Unit came today and I was not expecting this 9" long transducer. Thanks for the help.
