Moving a boat

So it looks like I’m going to be staying in Connecticut for a few years, and I’d like to get my boat up here. (I’m currently storing it in Charleston).

Any suggestions on the most efficient/cost effective way to move it the 900 or so miles? 20 ft, has decent trailer but might need some work for that long of a trip. Haven’t weighed it, but probably around 4k lbs total boat+trailer. Obviously, I could drive down and get it myself, but since it’s at least 14 hours, a heck of a lot of gas, and a real PITA drive each way I was wondering if there might be better options.

I assume there must be boat moving services out there, anyone have any experience with something like that and how much they charge?

You may want to call Clay Livingston at Carolina Boat Brokerage. He transported a boat that I sold to New Jersey.

I recently shipped a boat to Houston, TX and we bid it out through uship.com. We were very satisfied with transporter, very professional and he got it there on time and without a scratch. I was amazed at how reasonable it was. $500 for 1,000 miles

I am not sure how soon you want it moved, but I will probably be going to PA around Easter. I can tow it that far for you. It will knock 11 hrs off your 14hr trip to get it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Uship.com looks pretty good, probably going to give that a try.

MattR - appreciate the offer, but I won’t have time to deal with it until May. Things like total strangers offering assistance are one of the many things that make this site (and the Charleston fishing community in general) great! going to miss that up here, people just aren’t quite the same.

DO NOT USE USHIP! Email me and I will send you an article published by Boat US a few years back. Have you seen the show “Shipping Wars?” The last customer of mine that chose USHIP decided to have their 100k Grady hauled from Charleston to CA and the lady shows up in a 1985 Dually with a used trailer. She gave me 1" ratchet straps to hold down a 8000lb boat. She made it over the 526 bridge before she burned a bearing. That was just the beginning. Luckily she made it 3.5 weeks later safely! I had recommended Travis McGormley with Insured Boat Hauling, LLC right here in Charleston. Call him! He hauls tons of boats for me all over the place and I have never had any issues!
