MSC December Meeting

Ron Ahle with the SC DNR will be presenting our annual “State of the Lake” program.

This is one of the best programs we have each year. They do an excellent job giving us useful information from their gill net study and how regulation changes are impacting our fishery. This year’s program should be especially interesting given the severe fish kill that occurred in August of this year …

As always, come early to grab a bite to eat and swap tall tales and don’t forget to bring some extra dollars for door prizes.

Tight Lines …

I’ve also asked Ron to tell the club about the South Carolina Wildlife Action Plan and Supplemental Volume for Species of Concern. This document was updated in 2015 and Ron was a member of the Freshwater Fishes Technical Team. Here is a link to the “SWAP”:

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

oops! never mind, spoke too soon…Ron replied to my email and said that discussion is better suited for a whole presentation in itself…Vice President make a note for a future meeting… If anyone is interested I’ll be glad to share what I know about it…wish I had known about the public comment period on the update…

I looked at it and thought it may the a while, might just be my level of understanding. If he could tell us in five minutes what the gizzard future for Murray looks like that would be awesome. Can never figure out why they are harder to catch here than other lakes.

its probably the Stripers eating them all up. We have some awesome stocking rates per acre. The Cormorants are eating a bunch too but our fish are fat and healthy so no one seems too concerned right now about gizzard shad except us fisherman that like a bigger bait… Lets just hope the Bluebacks remain an option for us as bait… I see you tube videos of kids catching gizzard shad with a cast net in little stormwater sedimentation retention basins…lol it ain’t that hard to grow them… There are already restrictions on catching and fishing with bluebacks in North Carolina due to their status. Would you rather work towards a solution now for having shad to fish with, or wait for a ban to come along and then try and find a solution? Is it SC DNR that makes that call? or the National Marine Fisheries Service since Bluebacks are an anadromous fish? if the NMFS makes that call, do you think they will give us time to find a suitable alternative for bait ? Nope…

cant see NMFS getting involved for the landlocked herring we have. 95% of the bait guys are catching landlocked herring as well. However, DNR just proposed new regulations for saying that you can only have 12 dozen per person in your possession with a recreational license, this would include river run herring as well. im sure the bait guys all have commercial licenses though as they are selling them.

Can you show me where they make that distinction in the action plan? When I look up blueback herring in the freshwater fishes list, I see “highest priority” associated with it… See Appendix 1-B of the plan…

Im not sure if they are treated differently or the same, but it wouldn’t seem right if there are lumped together. it would definitely hurt if they are. please report back if Ron has any comment on the matter.

The plan acknowledges that more studies are needed in a variety of areas. This plan is meant to be revised and updated as new information is obtained. There hasn’t been a study on Gizzard Shad or lake Murray forage and biomass in several years. All we know is the people that try and catch Gizzard shad on lake Murray struggle and have been for a few years… This plan raises lots of questions in my mind but Ron would prefer not to get into this with everything that he already has planned to present at our meeting…

We will draw the winning ticket for the 50 gallon Xtreme bait tank at the meeting tonight. I will bring the tank with me. I hope the winner is there. I would hate to take it home and field test it.
