2-day camping trip on the Chatooga last week netted somewhere around 18 trout, mostly rainbows. Largest fish was a 12" brown. Not much of a hatch either evening. Great time around the fire with good friends. Got home, changed vehicles and hit the Green. Netted a dozen with half going 12-14", all on dries. Skipped the weekend and just got back from the Green. Somewhere around 25 this evening, again most on dries. Wetted a couple of stone flies and netted a 18" rainbow and a brown that went about 20". Will try to post pics as I get them downloaded. Great time to be on the water. Hatch was real thick at dusk, lots of sipping trout, made for a great time on top. A couple of more weeks and I’ll be ready for some Florida salt and a tarpon or two.

Last weekend I fished the Green River for the first time. As you are evidently familiar with the river…do you fish the DH section or elsewhere. Last Saturday the telephone recording suggested 1 unit running at 100%, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The water started rising at fishtop around 10:30 AM. Do yuou get out of the water when it rises and wait for it to drop, or what. How long does it take for the water to clear-up, etc. Many thanks

That information is classified. I could tell you but then I would have to take your fly rod away from you. I fish all over the Green simply because it’s close. Takes about 3 hrs for the flow to drop at Fishtop, longer the further you go downstream. 1 unit at 60% is as much water as I will fish. 1 unit at 100% turns the water really dirty. 2 units at 100% makes it unfishable. Water clears up fairly well after about 5 hrs of normal flow. Best days are those when it’s shut down all day. Those seem to be few and far between lately. Good luck.

Heck…I wouldn’t expect you to tell me which rock your fish hide behind! Thanks for the information that you provided regarding the flow and drop-down. Though I usually go further north…fishing out of Charleston the Green is probably the closest rriver for me also. Thanks!

Hey SC2079BS,
Were you fishing the DH of the tooga? Next time you go up there give me a holler. The tooga is practically in my backyard. Gonna be up there next weekend for some serious brown trout hunting.
Cheers,
Chris B.
Also stay as late as you can on the tooga. Find yourself a nice long pool and wait for the light cahills and bwo’s to start coming off. It’s really cool to see those big trout come out from their hiding spots and start sipping emergers off the surface.
Also if any of you flatlanders are coming up here for some trout check out the Rabun TU site. They have a nice newsletter with all the latest hatch info, etc.

I was fishing down the trailhead from some lake that has two houses on it. I can’t remember1 the name of it but we were above the DH section. If I get time to fish it again, I’ll give you a shout.
