Headed up to the Brevard area for my first trip of the year. Late as usual but earlier than last year. Son in tow. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Will make report upon return on Monday.
So much water…so little time.
As far as the delayed harvest goes I have heard that the upper section of the north mills is fishing well, the Green is also fishing well (make sure to check the generation schedule), and probably the east fork of the french broad. Fish nymphs in size 16-18 (with rubber legs), you can also use an egg pattern or large stonefly or bugger. No need to get too fancy. Just make sure that you’re bumping the bottom and you’ll catch 3 times as many fish.
If you’re looking for wild fish I’d check out the south mills, the upper davidson (above the hatchery), the lower davidson (downstream of looking glass creek), or one of the davidson tribs. For the wild fish you’ll be doing some walking but they will hammer a dry fly, which is fun.
If you need more information email me and I’d be happy to answer your questions (ashevillemike@hotmail.com). You can also stop in at Curtis Wright outfitters (in downtown Saluda) or Davidson River Outfitters at the junction of hwy 64 and 280 on the Davidson river. Make sure you take your son to the hatchery to see all the fish there.
