I fished the ICW in the fresh water w/ a squid lure & a worm lure on a carolina jig & caught a 14" mud fish. I took it to the locals & they said it was a mudfish & if it’s soggy it will make me sick. I felt the tail & it felt firm. Then I felt the chest & it was mushy, so I did a websearch & couldn’t find anything about a mushy mudfish making people sick. I showed the fish to another lady & she agreed that mush mudfish makes you sick. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? My gosh! What other fish make you sick? I’m lucky those folks were around or I might be sick, cause I was hungry.
Looks like Mercury might be the culprit per DHEC
and from the article:
“For instance, the guidelines for the Edisto River to Willtown Bluff warn against eating channel catfish, flathead catfish, bowfin (mudfish), chain pickerel and largemouth bass. Black crappie, blue catfish and bluegill can be eaten once a week.”
And here is a link to the complete fish consumption advisory for SC for 2014:

Where the heck are you from, Utah? Somebody make that man a gig and a give him a cheap headlamp so he can eat good!
I don’t know how the human race ever made it this long without dying out from eating the wrong stuff. If it smells spoiled, then don’t eat it. Other than that, cook the hell out of it and eat it. (**()!!

X2!!!
I would go ahead & eat it. What’s the worst thing that could happen?
I can’t help but ask, but I’ve never heard of the freshwater section of the ICW. What/where is he talking about?

Well, there are sections that don’t get to the ocean for many miles, and the water is near black and not salty at all along the ICW, it’s just not near Charleston
I’m finding out that catfish are easy peasy to catch here, but URGH, the thought of eating a 2nd one seems repulsive. You can generally trust your body’s intuition. The first one was quite satisfying after I cooked it & started eating it. Maybe it’s just the smell of raw flesh and guts that just turns off my appetite, or maybe my body intuitively knows that once a week is the max for a healthy diet.
I hope I can snag something a little more appealing next, using this catfish’s tail & liver. I just plan on dragging it through 40’ of water near the marina on a carolina jig & hope I catch a big tastey bass That would be nice.
I was dragging my carolina jig w/ the same squid lure & sparkley fish lure that I caught the mudfish on, and I was dragging it all over the waters, along floating debris & logs… and first I lost my squid when it got snagged on my boat. Then I lost the fish + hook when it got snagged on the bottom (either that or a fish stole it). I can’t be loosing hardware like this. All that dragging & no fish. Well, I switched from J-hooks to circle hooks & we will see if that does any better, but Im not sure that squid skirt is going to work right on a circle-hook. You know?
Anyways, no need for fried chicken. I want to catch my own meals fair & square

I’m with Cracker Larry. Buy that guy some food!
I have some outdated MRE’s I could contribute, but “they” say you shouldn’t eat those as well.

ICW is full of fresh water in certain sections. I typically fresh water fish the ICW once a week and always go home with nice blue cats to clean. Fresh water sections are full of them, especially around the areas the Waccamaw feeds in…
