mud minnows

i set the minnow trap early this morning,my dad i picked it up on the wat to the boat landing had about 3 dozen:smiley: we got to the landing and decided to head back because of wind going tommorow. but i kept the minnows in a half full 5 gallon bucket, i was inteding to change the water but now i dont need to. the minnows breathe air! they go to the surface and seemingly take a gulp then dive leaving bubbels at the top? has anyone else seen this or can tell me what they are doing??

Tough little rascals! Doubt they breathe air, but may be looking for some.

I use a cheap aerator with a pourous stone you can get just about anywhere to keep oxygen in the water. Its especially important in the summer that you use the aerator and not let the water get real warm or they will die pretty quick on you. In this cooler weather they seem to last pretty good.

Lip hook those beauties on a 1/4 oz. jighead, fish them slooooooow as can be and if there is a trout, flounder or red anywhere nearby they’ll gobble it up! MM are catnip for the fishies!
Good luck!

I have drained my live well and accidentally left several minnows in
the bottom corner in barely enough water to keep them coated for two weeks and they lived and were used. Now I leave water in the well and usually have minnows all year long

I found one 2 days after fishing, swimming around in my transom. I know there was gas/oil in there. They are tough little guys.

mm’s can breathe atmospheric oxygen,(out of the water) much like a betta(Chinese fighting fish)

Found some in the gutter around the anchor locker lid on my wailer last week while washing the boat after shrimp season, threw them in my pond and they swam away, wonder if they can live in fresh water!

Tarpon and mullet do the same

you can put almost anything in a minnow trap to get em. I took half a hot dog once and caught about 4 dozen. Just put the trap in the right spot. Try to find the deep part of a flat that floods at high tide. you will fill the trap in about 10 minutes right after it floods.

1 cheap can ($.50 or less) of sea food flavored cat food, poke holes in both ends.

Thanks for the help good info

I’ve been using cheap hot dogs. The oil slick created in the water seems to draw them right in. Usually a few shrimp in there as well.

Dried dog biscuits work for me and I find tide almost all the way out, or just coming in works best in my spot. Apparently just don’t leave your trap overnight as some dirtbag will come by and steal it before you get back to it in the morning.

just a regular ol slice of bread works for me. As others have said location, location, location
