Not sure what you mean “cast” for them. You can catch them in minnow traps in nearly any given creek during lower tide stages using canned cat food and wadded up white bread for bait (I use both at once if I have it) or a busted up blue crab.
You aren’t likely to catch many in a cast net. It can be done but they usually stay too shallow, too close to the oysters, and they aren’t going to be all that visible on the surface like finger mullet are.

Set up a minner trap near the bank of a creek at low tide loaded with whatever crackers, pet food or bacon flavored popcorn you can find in the cupboard. Day before yesterday my trap fell into the creek with no bait in it and had a dozen in there when I pulled it out a few hours later!
Casting seems better suited for mullet, darn minners are too little - but you can cast at 'em on the edges of a creek at low tide sometimes. Been some monsters this season.
thanks guys.

And, a baited minnow trap usually takes an hour or less to have a bunch of minnows in it. The traps are cheap. Usually around $12-$15. I use the silver traps. I have no explanation for why I catch less minnows in the black traps, but the silver traps work better for me. I cuaght about 80 minnows the other day in less than an hour. You can keep them for long periods of time at home too with just an air bubbler from PetCo or Pet Smart. No need for saltwater either. They will live just fine in fresh well water, but the clorine in city water will kill them. You need to change the water every 3-5 days because mud minnows crap like a geese. Basically, they will kill themselves by crapping in the water too much if you don’t change the water. Just drop bread or small table scraps in, and they will eat it. Mud Minnows have to be the toughest bait critters on the planet.

You can keep them alive for atleast a week just wrapped up in wet newspaper! Seriously tho they are tough.

The galvanized traps do seem more productive for some reason, Skeeter is right. They also last WAY longer in the saltwater than the black ones (which are standard “steel” of some sort with just a cheap plastic coating).

Last tip: Put fish meal (the same and shrimp bait) in the end of a panty hose or other fine mesh type cloth and tie it off. Just make it look like a suasage about 4 or 5 inches long and 2-3 inches in diameter. Best bait I’ve used for Mud Minnows when I want to catch them fast.

Thanks for the tips! I have a minnow trap, but I have yet to use it successfully. I will bring it out with me next time we head on out.

Do not feed them and they will not crap. I have kept them in the live well in the garage for up to three months in a couple of inches of water.

I found one alive in the nasty water in my transom…3 days after being on the water.

Ha,ha…I can relate. Found one in the same place after flounder gigging. The little sucker probably was vomitted up by a fish and was still kicking in tiny puddle at the transom. And, it was HOT too. Tough citters those mud minnows are.

Yep, I’ve got to agree with that for sure. Don’t know why either, but it’s a fact. The same is true for pin fish traps. For some reason it’s illegal to trap pin fish in SC, but I fish a lot in FL and we trap pin fish for bait there. If you are stuck with a black trap, buy a can of silver spray paint and it will work better.

As far as mud minners being tough, I think you could hook one through the lips, cast it out your truck window and drag it home from the boat ramp 20 miles, unhook it and throw it in a bucket. It will probably be alive next week.

The 'silver" is not a secret color or formula. Zinc, is the magic. It just happens to be silver in color.
Most people think that the most durable roofing material that you can ever buy is Copper roofing. Actually… Zinc coated copper is better.
