I have had good luck using cut mullet in the surf the last few outings. However, when I throw a hook on the head and cast it out, I get nibbles but no takers. I have tried hooking the head through the bottom lip and out between the eyes and I have tried hooking the head in the soft flesh behind the hard bone of the head. I have used size 3, 4 and 5 circle hooks. No hookups.
Is there a better place to hook the head? It seems as though I am waiting for the right fish to come along and gulp it down whole. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah, don’t use it! Lol. If you’re catching fish on the body don’t bother with the head. Birds gotta eat too!

Same for me, why bother with it if the body is catching fish. I’ve never had much luck with the heads.
Most fish are naturally leery of the head of another animal. Most of defenses are there. So a feeding fish wants the easy score, they come across a head, they don’t use deductive logic to say gee the cheek meat is a fine texture with full flavor… they pass and look for the easier score. Read all of this in a book one time, I can see some logic in it. Now if you are in a place for it, string it up and catch blue crabs and fish with them…
