Mullet on the troll

Has anyone ever caught a large mullet while trolling a grub? I did it yesterday and it was most definately a first for me. 12-13" mullet caught on a saphire/silver swimming mullet with a red jig head.

Cannibals!

If you follow CA Richardson (from the show “Flats Class”) on Twitter, he posted a pic yesterday with a mullet of approx 5 lbs he caught on an artificial lure. Pretty weird.

Had a good friend, and Kayak fishing legend, Jon Schein, catch a 3 lb or so mullet on a fly rod in Chokoloskee, Florida two years ago.

I took a picture of him holding it up by the leader for proof.

Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!

Some of the mullet I’ve seem lately look like they would put up a nice battle on the fly.

I caught a finger mullet with a fly rod a few weeks ago. Snagged him with the fly on a back cast. I couldn’t do that again.

Seriously, I’ve never heard of anyone catching a mullet with a rod & reel. Beside the finger mullet, the only way I’ve ever caught them is with a cast net.

When I was kid growing up in Bluffton, and old lady who lived a few houses down the river used to stuff a minnow trap full of old bread and hang it off her dock. She would then get out her cane pole and bait it up with dough balls on a bream hook. She would catch mullet like you wouldn’t believe!

caught one on a red/white top dog topwater plug this summer. definately a first for me

strip…strip…FISH ON!

Thanks for the responses, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one to do it. Had I known how the afternoon was going to work out I would have chopped him up into cut bait. No fish on the troll but the reds were thick chasin’ bait in the small creeks.

I saw a show on TV once where they were actually targeting big mullet on a fy rod in NC.
