Hey everybody just seeing if anybody has any tips or methods for catching mullet(finger or striped) in a trap or any other methods besides cast netting. I don’t have the $ for a nice castnet and I fish from shore so If I get it hooked up on an oyster bed I don’t think I will be getting it back. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Matt
Not sure if fish traps are legal here. I was told it wasn’t but I can’t confirm. I’ve caught more mullet from shore than I have from a boat. There’s plenty of bridges and docks and such to cast from
Not legal. You can buy Penfish traps but the law says you cannot trap them as other fish can end up in there.

Penny would probably get a lil upset if you set traps for her!! Just kiddin
You don’t have a to have big bucks to get a cast net. You could go with a cheap cast net from walmart as small as 3ft and hit the docks. I’ve seen them for as little as $30. Just baby it and take care of it cause its not made as nice of course but it will do the trick. Maybe find something in the garage to sell on craigslist to make the cash for a net. Surely you have something sitting around. I have to be thrifty to support my fishing habit When I cast my net, I don’t let it fall all the way to the bottom if I’m not familiar with the area and I’ve caught plenty of bait. I’ve even caught about a 2 lb mullet in my net before, although it was complete luck. Also, you could always spend $10 at Hadrels and pick up a minnow trap to trap mud minnows and I think you can catch finger mullet in them too. Good luck!

Check out spots you are likely to cast at during low tide. Make mental notes where you can and can’t cast. When it is warm, you can catch all the bait you can use.

Get a cheap mono net from walmart. Then get you a spool of 20lb cajun red mono to repair any holes you get. the red line is cheap and much easier to do repairs with.

If your cast net costs $300, or $150, or $30… don’t throw it in water you are not 100 percent familiar with.
PS: You are NOT going to catch mullet in a trap.

That’s a fact, or highly unlikely even if it was legal.

You know…
The old “woman behind the man” scenario comes to mind. I can actually remember the bait that I used to catch the fish that I consider “memorable”.
Early on I caught the bait…
Most recently, I ‘tied’ the bait.
Either way, I remember HOW I caught the fish and with what.
I throw a cheap 7’ net from WallyWorld. Opens every time (every time I throw it correct) and catches the bait as long as I throw on top of it. I don’t know what spending an extra $100 on a “better” net would actually get me.
I have been fishing from docks. If fishing from a boat, and especially if throwing a 10-14’ net, I’d probably spend the extra bucks. Otherwise, the cheapies do fine by me.
Thanks Everybody, appreciate the help
I got an old net I can sell you for a few bucks, its got good karma

Just FYI, buy a net from Hadrell’s and they’ll show you how to throw pancakes before you leave
