Mullet

Anybody seeing any big ones?

Caught about 20 the other day on Folly, gave them to some people … said they were eating them …

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Huge pods of 10-12 inch mullet are in the N. Edisto now along with tons of menhaden.

We couldn’t keep the big ones out of the net last week on Bailey Creek. Excellent shark bait.

The mullet caught near or in the ocean are excellent to eat. They taste a lot like trout if you clean them correctly. The big ones are great…on the Gulf Coast they are still called ‘Biloxi Bacon’ and they still have charity fish frys with them. In Florida, ‘Smoked Mullet’ are the thing and you can get them almost anywhere.

Don’t bother to scale the big ones, just fillet them and skin the fillets. Cut out the dark meat near the lateral line and fry them up in a deep fryer in small pieces. They are truly excellent tablefare when cooked up this way. (The dark streak on the lateral line will give them a greasy tast so it is best removed.) When cleaned this way they are excellent broiled on the grill.

They kept me alive at times when I used to live on Folly Beach back in another lifetime…way better than PB&J!

I did a airboat tour down in the Everglades last May with the *****y exGF. He said that the prize fish around the Everglades was mullet.

Saw some 12-15"ers up the Wando by Beresfords on Monday. Some bigger ones behind Morris also.

The worse the society, the more law there will be. In Hell there will be nothing but law, and due process will be meticulously observed.
