Fished around the forks in the afternoon with dad-in-law. Found stripers and largemouth feeding on small shad (and I mean small–about lima bean size.) Threw everything at them but they were more content eating shad. Caught a couple fat largemouth and 4 short rockfish. The ice fly was the ticket. Did catch a LM bass on a Rapala and had a nice striper hit and miss it too. Thank you Lord for the rain!
Amen on the rain !! also good report, thanks:smiley:
Took a couple of hours after church on Sunday the 6th with #1 son. Finally found fish rolling but couldn’t get them to hit anything. Any secrets to get them to hit something when they’re feeding on top and won’t hit anything you throw at them? Saw two limits that were caught around noon in upper lake around Black’s Bridge and over at Big Man’s. They said on bucktails.
They say white bucktails with an icefly trailer. I have had more luck with a small rattlin trap. But I can’t say I have ever caught anything big out of those topwater schools. Most of the ones I have caught out of schools have been around 16" to 18". But I do not put a lot of time in chasing schools.
On some other sites I’ve seen where people swear by the same set up as steelytom suggested, but chartreuse is the color they use.
also agree on the schools. i’m not a big fan of bird chasing. i’ve pulled a couple keepers from schools tho, just more little ones than bigguns.
Roger that. I don’t chase the birds either but I do like to work the schooling fish with my son. These fish on Sunday didn’t want anything we threw at them.

dynamite works.
i also have a 5/8 oz silver and white rooster tail i like to toss. also might try the gulp swim baits in different sizes/patterns. striper delights, zara spooks are two top water that supposedly work, although the only artificial i’ve ever had a hit on was a 4-8’ diving crank bait. i can’t remember the name of it at the moment, but it was 4" long and slender, white bottom turning orange then black on top with rattles. caught a couple decent “schoolies” with that.
I got a couple last spring with a “flex-it” spoon(add a swivel)…jerk and let fall…I have also got a few trolling this spoon…same here on the size though
Phishinphan, the correct name for dynamite when used for fishing is “Dupont Spinner”. Never used it, but I know a few people who say they did many years ago.

lol
Funny story about spoons. We were into schooling fish around DI one day and my bud picked up a FL and fought a dink on the other end. When he picked up the FL (flat line), he set his rod in the holder. He left the hopkins spoon in the water. A 28" fish proceeded to slam that spoon right at the boat. While my bud fooled with the dink I brought in a 7-8 lb fish on his penn spinning reel!!!
