Pretty windy but we had protected water to get out to Patti’s point fishing in 63 feet. Saw lots of fish between 30-45 feet up until 0730, but a lot of them were gangster fish who just killed the bait and refused to be hooked. Caught seven, 3 were short. Most measured 23 inches but also had a nice 26 inch. All were caught (including a catfish) between 30-40 feet. Only caught one right off the bottom. Really slowed down after 0800. Due to an anchor mishap, called it a day at 0930.
Are you seeing any surface schooling early in the morning? We fished day light last week and to my surprise we got caught in a surface slash and bite but didn’t have any top water tackle to try. Trolled next to the school and got three but really needed something to hit the top with and didn’t have it…
Yes, we have often seen them breaking the water and slinging bait early in the morning, but the duration has been very short. Usually we’re busy handling our downrods and can’t even consider trying anything topwater before they’re gone. But it’s still exciting.
The last 2 nights out we could hear an occasional bust close by on top. Hard to say what it is weather striper or not but def some are still pushing bait to the top.
