Murray 7/29/06 redux

Sat am … on the water at 6:15… should have been 5:30… had a couple of young guy’s from Pelion on board , one had fished with me before, but the other one was kind of a " know it all" it seemed… started putting fish in the boat at 6:45 or so , but mostly small fish… released about 4 then decided to keep one that was almost 20 and wouldn’t swim… bleeding from the gills and floated belly up after a few minutes… I hate to kill a small one, but with water temps at 84 degrees, they are almost steamed when you get them to the side…the “new” guy finally got one that went 24 inches and was excited 'cause it was his biggest fish ever, he said… still a fine am… weather didn’t start to get real hot until about 10:00 and we were ready to call it a day by then… still out of Jake’s along the left side in about 80-100 ft of water and down about 40 ft or so… had several take the bait as we started to reel in slowly… always something different !! next weekend will be " The Trip" with the grandkids… tubing, camping, playing etc… probably not fishing much, but grandpa promised another outing before school starts up… I personally feel that school starting so early is kind of bad… what happened to "Labor day " starts ?? hope all the boats on the water Sat am had as nice a time as wee did…

Glad yall had a good time. The weather has been bad almost every afternoon. I pity those folks coming down from NC to fish fri. night. I wish I could have gone, but looking forward to a week trip. I’ve never have seen this many fisherman on Murray. Yesterday we had 40+ mph winds, knocking over trees, power outage, etc. A very bad afternoon to be on the water. Yes, I also noticed that we also caught fish while reeling in slow. I figured I was at 60 ft and wanted to come up to 40 ft. The fish hit on the rise. However, our bait was probably dead, so reeling made it look alive, maybe. Sometimes, I’ll use my trolling motor to ease around slowly. See ya on the water.

Hey, I resemble that remark. Did come down Fri afternoon, set up camp at Dreher state park. Nice facilities. Just started to rig the lines Fri evening and the skies opened up and lit up. Took the nite fishing off my adjenda. Honkered down in our tent for the nite, what a light show. Started fishing around 530am around the towers. Wasn’t long before the lake became a parking lot. Caught a few shorts real quick, but when all the boats starting ariving, the bite slowed alot. Alex did manage to catch his biggest striper ever 26". Gotta start somewhere. The bonus for not being able to fish at nite was that I came home with 3 doz hering in the livewell. Used them on Lake Norman Sun afternoon w/my son and his friend. 5 more striper, 4 catfish, and 2lb largemouth. Sold it to one of the lady bassmasters fishing the last day of their tournment.lol Anywho, made the best of the weekend with my boy. Here’s some pics

WOW, what a fish. tunanut, how many pounds was that tuna ? How long did it take to land it ? My wife and I went to Camden Maine for a sailing vacation, on a schooner. We had a great time. I was wondering what they fish for up there. Are you a fishing guide up there ? Sounds like you are fishing a long time in Aug. Do you sell the fish you catch ? Sorry for all the questions.

726, 8 1/2hours to land on standup gear. A Penn 80STW w/100lb Momoi line. RFD(restricted fishing days) are part of NMFS controll efforts, so you need to plan a long trip to get a few good days. Sucks when it flat on an RFD, then 6 footers on the days you’re allowed to fish. Yes, I sell all of the Bluefin I catch, mostly to pay for the bait, required safety gear, and fuel, but I usually make some sushi out of the head steaks. I’ve been chasing giants since 1991 and landed 2 over the 1000 lb mark, dozens in the 400-800lb range, and a few babies around 300 to 400. I fish out of Saco, ME just below Portland and above Kenniebunkport. The marina has a bunch of great guys and gals to fish with. A few years ago they told me to stop bringing my boat up from NC and slaughtering all their fish and winning thier tournaments. “Please help us do it on our boats.” I’m not really a guide, more like a hired tuna assassin. It’s tough to deciede what to fish on, the 45 Cabo, the 35 Cabo, 32 Luhrs, or the 28 Buddy. The 28 Buddy is a new boat so I’ll certianly want to help bloody it up. The striper fishing is also very good up there this time of year. It’s not unusual to catch a 25-30 pounder at the dock while you’re cleaning the bote from a day of giant fishing. Hopefully, I’ll have some new pics to post by the end of Aug.

Man, thats awesome. Yeah, I think I would rather have you in my bote as well. I didnt know about the fishing up there. I thought it was just about the lobstering. The RFD system stinks. That forces you to go on rough days. They should just use a tag system. At least they know fisherman wouldnt be putting thier life at risk on bad days. That shows you what they are really concerned about.

RFD’s stink, but there’s good reasoning behind them. A Wed caught fish turns into a Sat nite Sun morning Japan fish. The markets aren’t open and the fish sits for a day and looses value bigtime. The Sun RFD is to give the commercial guys a break and keep the Rec guys down to one day/week. Sometimes, when no one is catching anything, they remove the RFD’s. Lotta good that does. There’s alot more rules and regs that I won’t even get into, but lets just say that Giant Bluefin tuna fishing isn’t just lets take the bayliner out and catch one. Here’s a link to my photobucket if you want to see a few more fish.http://s69.photobucket.com/albums/i44/tunanut/fishing/?start=all
