Murray Bait

Does anyone know what the deal is with George’s Bait ? Also where else do you guys get bait ? Anybody catch their own?

not for sure who george is. but i been getting bait at lake world for the last three weeks and it has been fine. in probably another month or two (i think; could be a little later) the herring will be in huge balls on the top all over the bottom end of the lake. you can actually just stand on the dam launch dock and throw nets and catch all you want. i try and catch some big baits in the summer; they can be very useful if you can find them.

Rumor has it george is getting out of the bait catching business. Seems the herring have been pretty hard to find.

Thank goodness for the herring being hard to get. Fish are so much easier to predict on shad. Herring make em move to much.

Next will be the shiner takeover. [:0]

Funny you say that, this is the best spring fishing I have had. Well, at least since the fish kills. I thought I was getting better, probably just the shad

There was more shad than I have seen in a long time. I fished Murray from 2004 thru 2006 and it was unbelievable. Moved to Clarks Hill for 2 years and then moved back and Murray was like a different lake. Fall thru Spring, the shad have been thick. The stripers are healthier too. Not to mention the white perch. Most of the keepers I catch are full of shad and white perch. Not a lot of herring. Go figure.

Only good thing about the herring is their spawn. Thats when throwing feathers is like no other.

Fish are much fatter this year than i have ever seen. I caught some 20" fish that I swore were 25" till I saw them. Last spring there were giant schools of shad rolling across the surface one after the other. The strange part was the striper were not in that area. I have not noticed white perch in the stomachs. I have notice them throwing up small threadfins when i land them though.

during jan i had fish throwing up threadfins, but my two biggest fish had big ole herring in their stomachs; but those bigger fish came from deeper water and were not on the banks. i don’t know if that would have anything to do with it though.

Yeah, I guess I haven’t had them throwing them up in a while. Fish have still been very fat though

Herring are a deeper baitfish on average than shad. Except for the spawn. No stripers yesterday, but there ws bait(shad) on the banks. less than 18" of water, yesterday afternoon. Nothing but little greenies on a Somethin’Else.

were you using bait at all?

I did on the Hill. Too many short fish and got tired of buying bait with the bait situation as it is. Either throw artificials (flies mostly) or troll umbrella rigs.
