Murray bait

Ive been in the area for a couple of years. Started striper fishing last summer after getting fed up with the green ones.

What aize and type cast net do you guys use? Not sure I’m throwing in the right places.

Is anyone using gizzards ?

I have a 10’ with 1" x 1" mesh with 1.5 lbs per lf. I can throw it but nor catching much bait. I live mid lake. Can get them up with lights at night but thy have been small.

Glad I found this site. Lots of Murray talk

I have been throwing a 1/2" mesh net and its even big too big. Thinking I am going to drop down to a 1/4" until bait gets bigger, but to be honest probably just gonna stick to sabikis. Only problem is probably 3 or so out of every ten die due to a hook in the gills/head or something. There is not a HUGE population of gizzards on the lower lake. Someone probably gonna call me a liar but haven’t really caught them, might just be too many herring. With that being said fish with what the fish are eating and that usually is herring. Though I have heard of people using gizzards and even BIG shell cracker for them…sorry for the rant got carried away I guess

1/4 mesh would catch the little ones for sure! I catch little blue gills off the dock and they will eat them if thy are not too deep.

I have caught threadfins a few times and they ate those well too.

I’m going to gt a 7 or 8’ net just because that 10 ftr wears me out after a few throws.

What’s the trick on sabiki. ? If it produces seems like the deal. Not near the mess

I use a 3/8", 8’ net. I wanted 1/4" but couldn’t find one. Make sure you get one with lead weights and not plastic weights. I bought a cheap net with the plastic weights and it sinks slow. It works fine at night but the bait runs out from under it in the daylight.

Chip,
We caught a some real nice baits Friday night, biggest I’ve seen this year.

Murraymaker, where do you get your sabiki rigs and what kind of outfit are you using with it? I’ve never done it and figured I’d try it out sometime.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them at Sportsman’s Warehouse and I would think Richard at Lake World probably stocks them as well. In a pinch, small bare gold hooks will work as well. Just tie one on about 6’-7’ up from the end of your line and then another every foot or so after that until you just have enough line left to tie on some weight at the end. You can just tie on a small sinker for a weight, but I prefer to use a hopkins spoon instead and will sometimes have a striper hit it while jigging for bait.

I ordered a 1/4" mesh net from this place in Macon,Ga. and buy my sabiki rigs on ebay in lots of ten when I find them. Sometimes you can get them for under $1.25 incuding postage.

I buy my sabiki rigs at lake world. I think they are $3, but I’m not sure. Been using the same two for 2 years. Just have to bend the hooks back after the striper destroy them. I use the smallest size he has. Most of the feathers are off of mine but the bare gold hooks seem to work just the same. I tie a 1oz wt to the bottom. Mark the schools of herring on the FF and drop that depth. I usually just slow the the drop by running the line through my fingers. most of the time it will stop and you can feel the herring. Pull them up, take them off and repeat. I just tie the sabiki on a spinning rod I use for striper. Murraymaker had one of those sabiki rods and got rid of it.

yea those sabiki rods aren’t worth a darn. just to (**() heavy…lol…your std striper set up works great. I have seen people using crappie rods and stuff but to each his own i guess. I know people who have tried to do this and just can’t. I don’t know? It did take me about 4 or 5 tries to get it figured out but i was using junk electronics and that was probably the problem. If you are over them they will bite the hooks.

support your local shops on the small stuff… I get my rigs from Lake world. i like the “owner” brand the best. Unlike Tom i can’t use a rig forever…lol…they usually get stuck in the boat carpet or ME or something else…that being said if you don’t have experience with sabikis TAKE YOUR TIME they will stick to anything and everything and those tiny hooks hurt just as bad as big hooks…

I wish there was a bait and tackle shop near where I live because I really like to go through those places. I just can’t justify driving 20 or 30 miles to pay a little more for items I can have delivered to my house. Most of the people I by from online are local people, they just don’t live around here. I don’t buy items if it says it ships from overseas.
