Murray Report --- 5-2-08

Some out of town friends wanted to try the stripers this afternoon, so we did. I did not have nearly the success that I had Wednesday, but we did finally put a couple of fish in the box.

We started out near the elbow…nothing. Moved to another nearby spot…nothing. Motored to Hollow Creed and tried most of my very dependable spots…nothing until about 4:30. This was the same time the bite started for me on Wednesday. Quickly caught four with two releases and two in the box. The friends then had to call it quits so they would not be late for a party in Aiken. Perhaps we could have caught more if we had been able to stay later. Perhaps not.

Also got checked by DNR this afternoon. Licenses, wearable flotation, throwable floatation, whistle, and fire extinguisher. Everything was in order and we were wished luck by a very cordial DNR officer.

Tally:
4 caught
2 released
1 kept - 21.5"
1 kept - 22.5"

Both kept fish were cleaned and sent to Aiken.

No parasites were seen on any of the four fish.

Hopefully we will have better luck next time.

Laid Back,
Good job in that gale force wind. I went out with artificials Friday afternoon. I few short strikes but no fish. Saw bunches on the bottom in 30’-45’ of water but that’s a tough situation when you’re trolling with artificials. Live/cut bait would have been a better offer.

Kevin,

I only know how to fish for stripers one way…artificials, and my favorite is the u-rig. I marked a lot of fish, but they were holding deep. Even when I trolled over a few deep brush piles that I can usually count on, I saw fish on the sounder, but no bites. Friday was tough for me. The fish that were caught were off a point in 20’ of water.

Laid Back :sunglasses:

I went sat am and fought the wind as well. Not too much fun as the anchor wouldn’t hold. Put one 18lb fish in da bote right at first light on live bait downrods-also the usual short fish. Marked lotsa fishes but hard to make bite-thought with the front coming in it’d turn on…Only a couple more weeks til they turn on. Took wife and kids out for boatride on sun (ALTERIOR MOTIVES FOR SCOUTING) found tons of fish at macedonia/dreher are-I mean tons! no rod in da bote to be found :face_with_head_bandage:. Did have some yahoos on sat out in john boats trying to stay afloat right at lauch site on Irmo side-it was ■■■■ rough at the dock-waves coming over it!

i think i saw you out there triton…royal blue hull? that’s a sweet ride if it was you. we launched and landed about the same time as you saturday. landing was really tough! i got 4 short fish in the morning bite, one each on down rod, free line and planer boards. went back out saturday night with steelytom got more shorties, 2 huge gar (don’t ya hate it when they fight and run like a big striper then find out it’s a 4’ gar) and 2 keepers, mine was 22.5" tom’s 25. one released, one fileted.

how’d the graph work?

Thanks for a great afternoon Laid Back. Wish we could have stayed a little later to see what else we could have caught. It was great to be out on the water with a real pro.

love the graph, it’s a humminbird 787c2 with dual beam ducer. as you know there are way too many settings/features to get customized on the first trip. but what a difference having the finder. i still get a lot of interference while on plane, but it still shows the bottom. it has a 16 channel gps, but the base map is totally useless. looks like i’m in the market for the navionics 2007 east card. i much prefer the color over the b/w i have on the jon boat. anyway… we read a lot of fish holding the bottom with few bait schools. i didn’t put enough gas in the boat to go on a real search, but we checked a few places. now i just need to mount the head unit. still not sure where to do that.

Phish - Yea, thats me with the triton-preshiate the compliments on the boat. Rough at the landing for sure. Glad to hear you caught a few…My co-fisherperson did not hold up his end too good…bad when ya gotta fire help in catching fish! Bad when you are on fish and cofisherperson hasta doodee and ya gotta back!!!Maybe use him to chum for gar bait! The gar have been wearing my free lines out as well-does feel good though . May look you up sometime and go with me-gets really old tryig to fish with some rookies when you get on the fish hard.

triton i have a zebco 33.can i go fishing with you.i’ll even bring the crickets.:sunglasses:i know how you feel about getting good fishing partners.i have one but he lives in nc.we try to fish every chance he gets.which hasn’t been much.steelytom and phishinphan are good guys and would be great help when the bite is on.

thanks for the kind words sharky. me and steely are learning… and the curve has been steep during the winter months. it seems to be getting better for us lately. at least we’re starting to get a couple keepers and a conisistent bite. not bad considering we only fish a couple times a month.

anytime phishinphan.i hope that i helped in some sort of little way.i want to go with tom and fish the river.i have acess to it behind the zoo right past the gardens entrance.

you have definitely! you’ve turned us on to a few good spots up lake, much appreciated.

the river is really nice fo sho. it would be great in your jon boat as long as there’s 500 cfs running. lower than that and it’s a lot of work going down to the spots i know above the zoo. going UP is the most fun, but doable with 500 cfs.

i have to say my favorite part is drifting with the current casting banks and structure while having a herring under cork lazily following the boat.

phish you have mail.

Phish or Shark-welcome at any time! Nice to have people with some experience to go with! Maybe we can teach each other something-I think steely tom is the u-rig guy that I know nothing about for the lake-could be phish or sharky…dunno. Would love for ya’ll to come-shoot me a email-thinking about going this weekend. Let me know…

triton i don’t pull u-rigs.i’m as dumb as a stump when it comes to that.i live bait and cut bait.i do like to pull boards.i can’t go this weekend got a saltwater trip planned.thanks though.

i’m not sure if i’ll get on the water either. me and steely are also live bait guys. he’s caught a couple nice linesiders on the river using artificials, but on the lake it’s almost exclusively live bait. the one and only time i tried to fish a u-rig i lost it to the bottom. steely’s always itchin to get out too, especially with his boat ‘dry docked’ for the time being. thanks for the invite.

EDIT: i’ve tried cut baiting a couple times. i seem to only catch catfish when i do that.

Cut bait ain’t too bad-yes you do catch some other trash fish but during the colder months seems to work better…Live bait isda chit! No two ways about it-during the really hot months I like the stretch 25/30 from spences to towers early am and night-live bait downrods when sun gets up. Works for me most of the time. Sharky- you going down to the pier? 23 gonna team up with you?

triton lease let’s don’t get hm started on the striper section.this is the only one he doesn’t frequent.

Got a point shark! Have fun a knock em out down there. I spent many days on the pier-lotsa good guys and lotsa fun. Scenery should be getting better there too now-saw some keepers sunday at the ramp (wife didn’t catch me) ■■■■ - wish I was 18 again (well, maybe 15 or 16)
