Well it was a odd day on the water
It was the first trip ince last year. Started the trip off well by netting a bait tank full of herring. I was confused by where people were fishing. There were about 10 boats lined up along the rocks by the dam. There were a number of boats fishing in 100 feet of water. I thought this time of year the fish were in shallow. I decided to try a spot that worked well last year. We tried to slow troll some herring in about 10 feet alone the back side of goat island. All we got were about 5 15" striper, 3 of which were gut hooked with circle hooks? We missed a few more hits. After a hour and a half of not to much, we moved over to the tip of spence were all we caught was a rod a reel. As we were trolling, I snagged a floating cork. On the other end was a older rod and a penn GTI 310 reel. I have since cleaned the reel and it still works and will acompany me on my next fishing trip. We then moved over to bomb island with again not much luck. Tried some umbrellas and some live bait with nothing. Went home at 11:30 since guy on boat had something to do at 1:00.
Total for the day:
Free Bait, 3 gut hooked small striper on circle hooks, no fish to clean, a Penn GTI 310 reel and old rod.
It was a odd but disapoiting day. All my money spots from last year for slow trolling were gone or much shallower. All of the good cover was out of the water. I did see one guy boat about a 10 pounder in 140 feet of water.
Anybody have any suggestions on were to fish or what I should do different?
Tight lines,
Chris
