Murray Report

Went out at about 7:30 Saturday evening. Caught four keepers around the islands on downrods and BB’s. All were in the 22 to 28 inch range. Lost what would have been about a 15#er at the boat. But they are allways bigger when they get off. Went over to the towers at about 9:00 and there did not seem to be as many fish. The DNR was going boat to boat. Each time they left a boat it would pull out and head to the dock. So before he came over to my boat I went back to the island. The odd thing was that there was a boatload of drunks flying around yelling, but the dnr never bothered them. Just the fisherman.

Hey Steely,
You might have done the smart thing. I cant figure that out as well, about not bothering the drunks. I have the DNR number in my speed dail on the cell phone just in case. I was windsurfing one day, when a thunder storm blew in from the SW ( a real bad one). I put my stuff in the truck and headed home when out several hundred yards from the dam I saw 3 people in distress. I arrived on the Lex side of the dam, threw my board into the water and paddled against 3 ft waves to find 2 small children and a mother that had fallen off their jet ski. It took me forever to get to them. I was totally exhausted. If I had not had reached them, they would have been beaten by the rocks on the dam by the huge waves. I was thinking that the DNR would have rescued us by this time. WRONG. The crowd was growing and finally an ambulance showed up. No DNR. A scuba diver even helped us all swim back in with his nice big fins. As we all crawled up on the shore, to cheering on-lookers, EMT’s and other people took charge of the mother and small kids. You guessed it, NO DNR ever showed up. However, you better not have a rip or tear in that life jacket mister. OK, I’ll get off the soap box. Sorry guys for getting long winded.

DID THEY GIVE YOU A MEDAL FOR SAVING THE LIVES OF THOSE STUPID PEOPLE THAT DIDN’T GET OFF THE WATER WHEN THERE WAS A STORM COMING? THEY SHOULD HAVE.I GUESS DNR GOT OFF THE WATER BEFORE THE STORM HIT LIKE AN INTELLIGENT PERSON SHOULD HAVE. BESIDES, JET SKIS ARE STUPID, HOMEOWNERS HATE THEM, FISHERMAN HATE THEM, I HATE THEM.

Well that was mighty nice of you to go swim out there to them. Did anybody ever call the DNR? Cause if you don’t do that then they cant come. THey cant be everywhere all the time. As for the drunks how did you know they weren’t already checked? and how do you know if they were drunk? Did you give them a breathalyzer test? It was 9am in the morning so think about that as well. Also what good does a torn life jacket do? if you need it and its torn its no good. Does the Highway Patrol come out there for people everytime it storms? I don’t think so. Just think theres a lot more idiots than officers out there

In Japan, you have no idea what they are saying, and they can’t help you either. Nothing makes any sense. They’re very polite, but you feel like a joke is being played on you the entire time you’re there.

Bcastin, no, I didnt get a medal. A pat on the back was good enough. However I did get a nice letter from the 2 kids saying they’ll never forget me. Thats nice.
Yall dont know the half of it though. The dad bought the jet ski that day, put some gas in it and went to the landing. He saw the storm coming. Launched anyway. Forgot the kill switch landyard for his wrist. Went out anyway. He went for a ride then gave it to his wife who never rode a jet ski before. Then she took the 2 kids out. All this was in 3 ft waves blowing from the west. Of course the ski turned over between the towers and the SCEG park on the Lex side. You know the Kids almost paid the ultimate price for their parents stupidity.
Hey Mav, good point. The story was… I was running about 30 mph when all of a sudden saw a large school of stripers. In the heat of the moment my topwater lure hooked into my life jacket. After a few good tugs on the hook I knew it was a knife job being past the barb. I made a small cutt, maybe 1/2". Yep, that was it. Upon a close inspection from a DNR representative, the officier states the PFD was unfit for wearing. But, this is my most comfortable jacket ever. I actually wear it. Maybe he was just having a bad day. After that, I was having a bad day. You points are well taken though.

Wow, looks like you two got your period on the same day. Because you don’t like jet skis, a mother and her kids deserve to die. Yeah, that makes sense. It was 9 at night and yes, I had my breathalyzer. They all blew above the legal limit.

I was not ripping the DNR, I was more wondering what was going on. I saw them pull up to five boats and all five left the towers for the launch as soon as they pulled away to the next boat.

Oh Shoot. I’m sorry that sounded kinda rough. I didnt mean the 2 kids deserve to die. It just wasnt the kids fault. It was bad judgement on the parents part. However, I was ripping on the DNR. I’ve had a couple of bad experiences dealing with them. On the other hand I’ve had some good ones too. This is the bottom line: I use fishing to unwind and have fun. At times I find myself nervous of being checked, and wondering what they’ll stick me with, how much the fine will be. Yeah, paranoid, on the lake. Fisherman are a real easy target. But thats just my opinion.
