Murray Saturday Night

Got about 10 fish, mostly shorts, but did get(2) 23" and (1) 21" keepers. All trolling between 35’-45’ in the big water after dark.

sounds like you picked up some more after I left. Nice work. I ended with one short. Those downriggers must really help.

yea…i actually had only one keeper and one short when u left…then they started biting slow but steady with a fish every 30 minutes or so…i didn’t plan on staying out so late but it seemed like I would get one every time I was about ready to quit…dind’t get off the lake till after 2 am…and then worked today…won’t be doing that again any time soon…

SS, it just feels good when you got a bite, doesn’t it? I would call in sick the next day if I stay that long. SS, would you tell me how you set up your rigs for trolling? I use U-rig but did not get luck a lot. Thanks.

Years ago I would have called in sick myself, but since I am working as a contractor these days, I only get paid when I am there. Calling in Sunday would have cost me a days pay at time and a half for 3 small keepers. Not a good trade off.

I was using downriggers and pulling rapalas. I can’t help with the umbrellas as I never use them. As soon as the weather cools a bit you should be able to reach them. Normaly this time of year I catch them trolling about 20 -30 ft.

If you want to get down deep without lead core or DR’s Sportman’s Warehouse has some large Stretch 30 looking plugs made by Yozuri that have a huge diving lip and a place to attach a sinker under it. I believe they claim it will dive 40’. I have never tried them, but they may be worth a try. Probably wanna have a rod with a bit of backbone to pull them.

I have a couple, but haven’t tried them yet. If I make it out tonite I my tie one on.

I’ve tried pulling Stretch 25’s a few times with no luck. The problem I’ve found is that in order to get the lure down to the advertised depth of 25 feet, I have to be pulling at least 5 mph which is too fast for stripers. Even when using small diameter braid the best I could get with a Stretch 25 at 2.2 mph was 15 feet. I prefer using artificials since herring are so high maintenance. I’m thinking about picking up some down planers. Anybody have any input on those?

I can watch my stretchs’ at 25-28 feet at 2.5 mph on mono. Sumpin ain’t right bro?

I just ordered some deep divers from bass pro shops. they are the bass pro brand and say they will dive to 25-30 feet. they were 12.99 each. Should get here before the weekend so I can try them out.

21" and a 23" keeper out of 6 fish from 7:30 - 11 last night. about 40 ft. maybe try again fri nite

I think the time is coming to try some trolling, but will have to make a trip to beaufort to get my stretch 25’s. Been keepin them down there for kings, but have yet to pull one in the ocean. Thursday will mark 1yr since i had my best trip on Murray, and it was my first time trolling. I was pulling 2 stretch 25’s with 100’ of line out and had probably 1.5oz of lead 8’ in front of the baits. At the time i was fishin out of my father in laws scout and it just barely kicked into gear and occasionally would have to kick it out, but speedo said between 4 and 5mph. I though i would never catch a thing cause i was burning these bait through the water. I was marking fish around 30’ deep and plum wore them out for about 2 hrs. i was trolling with striper stix and they were pretty much doubled over just from the 25’s and lead, i had to keep the reels ingaged and back the drag off to where it would barely hold without pullin out. i don’t think the speed really matters as long as they are feeding. Isn’t about this time of year they feed real heavy getting ready to take the swim up lake? heres a pic from that night. striperskiff and a couple others did great that night too if i remember correctly.
