Murray Stripers vs. Bass fishing

Should I stay away from Murray on the weekend? I’m still shaking my head…

This was my first trip to Murray for stripers and admittedly I was simply shooting in the dark. We caught one short on a old deep diving plug off of Pleasant Point. I’m a novice. I had noted during the morning, serveral boats coming very close to us while we trolling. In fact, I had to kick into neutral once to allow another boat to cross my bow.

Later, my son and I were trolling around an island close to Dreher Island with two rods out. I looked behind the boat to see a bass boat with two guys cut very close across my stern (probably 30-40 yds). We both grabbed a trolling rod but we lost two lines, a bucktail and deep diving plug. I yelled at the guy but he waved and kept going.

I followed him until he stopped and asked him if he knew he cut off my two lines. He said no and made a very sarcastic apology (I was agitated but no cussing from me). His partner mouthed something about me needing to get over it and there was nothing they could do. I asked why he needed to be so close to my boat under any circumstances and I go some weak excuse about shallow water (we were in about 20-25 ft of water). His partner starts cussing and says if I can’t afford to lose a little line and plugs, then I didn’t need to be fishing. Then he says something about Pros don’t have to worry about these kind of things. ???
He again says I should get over it as they commence to fish again. I noticed he had no SC registration numbers on his boat, so I said I wish you had some numbers for me to report. His partner, is still cussing and ranting at this point so I leave.

I tried to reach a game warden on a VHF radio but I couldn’t raise one. I know there was one in the area becuase I had seen them about 30 mins prior. I could have at least complianed. The boat was a white 21 ft Triton bass boat with no registration numbers and a Marshall’s Marine sticker.

scout sorry to hear about that.it happens all the time.i’ve had several planer boards cut off.SOME bass fisherman think the lake belongs to them.you should of backed up to them and trimmed your motor up and gave them a shower.there was a bass tourney today.here is a number for a dnr officer.803 480 0268 al eidson is his name.he may not be on the water but he can call to another officer.again sorry to hear about it.

I’ve been in a lot of bass tournaments and there are some great folks, but there are also some genuine redneck A-Holes.

HEY! dont blame the “red necks” If you think this is only a moncks corner thing go to remlys on any given saturday.

Sorry to hear about that man. these storys are getting to common. Im waiting to hear somthing on the news where someone gets a asscuttin due to stuipidity on the water.
However… alow me to help, so one redneck helpin ya to show you not everyone is bad…
Stripers are not REALLY running right now. they are out there but you would be better off getting your boat ready to be %100 preped for some serious fishing in about 2 weeks. The stripers are coming.
How to know when it’s time to striper fish… The ■■■■ triggers stripers to bite. so the key is to figure out what triggers the ■■■■? Well when it gets warm enough for everyone to turn on there AC’s at home GO FISHING!!! the damb will pump out power and fire up the turbines. thus injuring little minnows. the striper will sit at the bottom of the damb and wait for a easy meal. show up and make your bait look like a easy meal. injured minnow or something.

I catch most of my fish the night before I go fishing.

10speed,
What’s with the monks corner thing? He was fishing in Murray. I’m a SC native, not a yankee transplant and yes there are some really nice redneck folks on the tournament circuit like me. There are also some A-hole redneck jerks on there also, but heck they aren’t just in bass fishing, they are everywhere! They are the ones tossing cigarete butts out the car window and tossing their McDonalds bags and beer bottles out the car window also. Hey lighten up! Get a grip! I call em like I see em!

that is one of the reasons I like to night fish. Plus the wind will usually die down at night. I got to the launch on shull Island about 4:30 yesterday and There were only about five trailors left. Fishing is better in the morning but I still usually get a few. Although one night when the lake was rough I came within a few feet of being run over by a bass boat. His bow was about five feet in the air, I have no idea how he though he could see anything.

I have a lot of friends that bass fish and 95% of them are courteous and adhere to the “rules of the road” as well as sportsmanship principles (i.e. not greedy, etc.). It is a shame that the 5% are encountered all too frequently. It’s proof positive that money and class are totally unrelated. Just read the stories about Murrel’s Inlet, etc. I feel bad for you, Scout, but outside of Sharky’s advice (numbers in your cell), I’m not sure what anyone can do. I know what I would have done not 5 years ago, but I have mellowed and can’t afford attorney’s fees and bail.

I like Sharky’s idea of a “shower”. Failing that just idling at high RPM’s should get the point across, or drive back and forth at 1/2 throttle until they start chumming! KIDDING! well…sorta…My wife keeps reminding me that 2 wrongs never make a right, etc. (Which is why I spend so much time fishing)

I seem to find the rednecks to be the most courteous people. It is the arrogant rich snobs that I don’t like. And I am not saying all rich people are snobs either. But when I am launching my boat by myself it is always a redneck that asks if I need help.

Bassholes

Megalops, Where have ya been? Doing anything on the rivers yet?

hey steelytom; be careful who you call rednecks. all of us that offer to help or do not have on the top of the line fishing clothes or not the latest boat are NOT REDNECKS!
do not stereotype everyone. the next thing you know is that we will go back to calling you a ■■■■ yankee. just when we were getting to know and like you.

shame, shame, shame.

p.s. give me a call. we need to try and capture some stripers and crappie.

Didn’t mean to offend, I think being a redneck is a good thing. I am sure that most people that see me heading out in my boat say “look at the redneck”. And since I am from pittsburgh and moved here, I am a dam yankee. And yes, we do need to get out. I have not been able to get more than one or two stripers per trip. But I always seem to pick the worst days to go. Also I need to give you back your trolling motor. I have a buddy coming down to fish Friday and Saturday. I’ll probably be out all day and night both days

hey s/tom; no hurry on the motor. i am surprised that it still works. it is not going to win any beauty contest but it will also probably not leave your butt out in the lake. looking forward to getting together as an excuse to drink a beer.

Hey scout I work for the dnr and you getting a game warden on the vhf radio is going to be nearly impossible. That is not what we usually work off of. Any sorts of problems like that you can call 1-800-922-5431 but I hat to let you know as long as he was 50 feet away from your boat then there was nothing illegal about it, and believe it or not that would be a domestic dispute and would fall under the sheriff department’s jurisdiction. Sorry about the troubles
