geez, where were they fishing, we didn’t see anything but one bite.
they were fishing behind spence island in 30ft of water.they also pulled baits from spence island to the towers.also a couple of fish were caught in the trees at the dam.the fish are scattered.

we were mostly in deeper water around spence. we actually spent some time behind spence, where I’ve had decent luck before this summer, but we didn’t get that shallow. We DID troll from the dam to spence with no luck…
what kin d of bait were you using.how fast were you trolling.

well, we were using live bb herring for the first few hours, tried cut bait some also (with the herring that died, ha). we freelined and downrodded.
we trolled with bucktails on one line and a herring hooked through the eyes on the other on a tube n’ worm (that was a new one). trolled mostly around 2 to 2.2 as usual (which I have had success with), varied from 1.8 to 2.8 overall though. I think we varied depths on the downriggers from 25 down to 50 or so…
We tried several different things, which kept it kinda fun and entertaining even though we had no luck. but we didn’t mark near as much activity as usual either…
we only troll bb,1.8-2.we use 1 1/2 oz lead.trying to keep the lines less than a 45degree angle with the boat.i have never had much luck with artificals while trolling, not saying that they don’t work.i just like the live bait better.when is your next outing?

I also try to pin it right on 2.0mph for the most part. I use my regular motor and two 5 gallon buckets. haven’t had a wet foul YET (knock on wood). Usually will be 2mph at idle, 1.6 or 1.8 into a good wind, and 2.2 to 2.5 following a good wind. I have downriggers so can be very accurate on depth…usually put the lures/bait about 50 or 60 feet out before I clip onto the rigger. Also usually use bucktails and/or u-rigs and also know some other folks who mainly use bucktails, with some decent success.
Sometimes end up “trolling” live herring just because we’ll have some downrods down and will want to move over to another area, so we’ll move like that with a couple lines still in. Usually if we are going to seriously troll for a while though I take off the downrod rigs (also use 1.5oz) and use the downriggers.
Do you hook through upper and lower lips when trolling instead of under the dorsal fin? I just hooked this one through the eyes cause it was dead already and the last herring we had left, and you do that offshore with dead bait and we had no luck yet so what the hey.
Will try to go this weekend if I can, I am sure. May go for the afternoon/evening bite though this time…depends on when some of my buddies are available.
i hook mine in the nose holes.it seeems to keep them alive longer.i also use the smallest wire hook i can get away with, also 12lb line.
what types of hooks have you been using? lose any on them? ever use stinger hooks with the troll setup?
Always trying to hear new ideas! :^)
the hooks are bigger than a crappie hook i can’t remember the size.i take them out of the pack and put them in trays.i don’t use stinger hooks.i don’t like any thing to hinder the action of the bait.i have lost fish on every rig that i’ve tried.that’s part of fishing.the wire hook seems to penetrate better and the bait is more active.i’ll post more later i’m trying to load up for a week of saltwalter fishing.goood luck on your next adventure.
I USE 15-20LB LINE WITH 25LB LEADER AND EAGLE CLAW CIRCLE SEA HOOKS. NEVER LOST BAIT OR FISH BECAUSE OF THE SETUP. BAD KNOTS HAVE BEEN THE REASON ON A FEW OCCASIONS THOUGH!
