Don’t usually do this, but since we scrubbed Friday due to the wind forecast that didn’t happen, and we knew what Saturday would be like, we skipped Sunday School and headed to the lake after church. Pulled planer boards in Ballentine as we have been doing in 30-35 feet of water, water temp 54+. Saw good concentrations of fish until the recreational crowd got into high gear. Managed two shorts, one 21, one 22, and one 23. Had about half a dozen other bites that didn’t hook up. All over by about one o’clock. Nice to be in shorts and light jackets again.
Thanks for the report. Have ya’ll tried the multiple planer boards yet?
I took my 19 yo son out today for his first striper trip and had similar results. 6 fish but only 3 keepers 24", 22" & 22". We put out 8 rods (4 planers, 2 dr and 2 fl. All fish caught on the PBs and between the wind and the other boaters I am wore out! We never left Beard’s Creek the entire day. Even with the wind it was nice to finally get my boat back out on the water.
We did our best imitation of real striper fisherman by setting out 4 PB’s (two were the new ones we won as one of the door prizes at the last MSC meeting) and one big slip float. Thanks for your instructions on how to set them all out. Looks like we’re mastering the technique in getting it done and utilizing them, however it does get kind of hairy if too much happens too fast. Maybe a bigger boat would help. The last fish caught came straight up out of the water four times before he finally nailed the bait. That was pretty neat.

I’ve gone from a 12’, 16’, 18’, and now a 20’. Each time I think 2’ feet is all I need, but it turns out I still need another 2’.

I fished a 15’ G3 for years. Pulled downriggers and a 9 rod spread off from it and carried a 30gal bait tank. It was rough at times to say the least. After jumping to a 21’ wide open boat I am still feeling like I am in heaven…lol… I really don’t think I need bigger but would love something wider.

Yeah, I’m actually ok with the size of my boat. If I could move my console up 3’, put the motor on a bracket to close in the back, and have a built in bait tank it would be perfect. I also with it didn’t love to drink so much gas.

I’ve had other 19’ boats before , but this is the first one with an 8’ beam. It’s amazing what a difference it makes. If I was buying another skiff and had a choice between a 17’ x 8’ or the 19’ x 6’, I believe I would go with the 17’.
Thinking about this reminds me of back in the early 80’s when I was in the army, and for a while after I got out, when we were living in a mobile home near the fort that was 12’ wide. Eventually moved into a 14’ wide of the same length and though we were living in a mansion.

Boats are like garages or workshops. It seems no matter what you have, it fills up and it would be nice to have something bigger.

I currently fish out of a 19’ bay boat and have been entertaining the idea of switching to a pontoon! maybe that will be large enough.
Ive found the bigger the boat the more toys you tend to load aboard.
When I went from a 25’ 10’ wide to a 28’ 11’/6"wide I added a blow up life raft, extra water, engine parts, “tons of might use one day stuff” I have done away with the head and filled it with tackle!
I did away with the inboard and added a bracket with an outboard to my 20’ Glassmaster wow what a lot of room it made

ever! he has never been much on fishing or deer hunting but loves doves and ducks. He gets bored easily I guess. My little one (12 yo) is my fishing / hunting / gun range buddy. If it’s done outdoors he’s all in.
Anywho, my 19 yo calls me up and asks if I’ll take him fishing so I was elated with an opportunity to spend a little father son time with him. He had a great time and says he wants to do more this summer. I would have had a better time had I not slipped on the trailer fender while getting bait from Lake World and fell upon the driftmaster pro and felt a sharp snap. I’m still in trouble with my nurse wife for not immediately going to the doc for a broken rib but I didn’t want to disappoint my boy.
I fished out of 13’ v.hull with a 15 horse johnson. I caught more fish out of that boat! Sometimes I think I wish I had it back. Time spent fishing with a child is worth a cracked rib! Before you know it their grown:frowning_face:

Good on you for sucking it up and fishing with a broken rib so he could enjoy some fishing!
I never had to fish while suffering from broken bones before, but one time when the blue laws were still in effect, I did fish on a hot Sunday afternoon for a few hours without any beer.

I can’t decide who fished with worse conditions, Striperskiff or curlydog. I’m leaning towards curlydog cause that sounds pretty painful but striperskiffs story is just unbearable. ha

More alcohol=more fish. Back when I was a drunk, I caught fish all the time. I quit drinking, bought a boat, now I can’t catch a fish! Go figure!
