Not trying to be critical here since I don’t think you killed the fish but I believe that ray you gaffed is a Smooth Butterfly Ray and they don’t have a spine/stinger. It’s perfectly safe to pick them up. No need to gaff them.
You’re right Great White, I did release it and had I known that it was a “non-stinger” ray I would not have gaffed it. To be honest, my biggest concern was controlling it with my son on the boat. Part of the learning curve of a novice saltwater angler I guess.
On a side note, some folks have messaged me and said the sharponose sharks are actually good to eat. Any thoughts on that??
Sharp nose is a tasty meat. I usually throw it in the cooler if a mature one is pulled in. Be sure to gut it immediately before throwing on ice. I prefer it fried vs grilled.
