Murrells Inlet Jetties 8/28 Late Report (w/pics)

Just figured I would throw this out there. Up for vacation from the Columba area and went fishing at the jetties Tuesday and caught an abundance of Balck Sea Bass that of course were too small and alot of other small fishies too that were not what we were targeting but we had fun. One fish that we caught that I had never caught before was a Ribbon Fish. We caugh about 8 or 10 of these bad boys on a spoon. They were fun to pull in on light tackle for all of the surface they had fighting you while pulling them in.
Ugly sucker to say the least

And boy are they Toothy

We got back to the landing and asked a local fella that had been trolling the jetties for flatties if he had ever heard of anyone ever trying to eat a Ribbon Fish and he said no. We told him well you are lookin at some fellas that are goin to try it. We went home and fileted them and they had some pretty white meat and very little blood line. Not even enough blood line to bother with. The skin was alos not thick enough to bother with either so we just cut them into about 4 inch peices, salted and peppered them, floured them with some House Autry and fried them suckers and they were pretty good. My 3 yr old daughter ate about 4 or 5 peices for supper. She loved it.

Any body else ever have any experience with any Ribbon Fish?

By the way, the Local guy we talked to had 3 good Flounder. One of those would have been classified as a door mat. It looked to be around 22-26", the other two were just a touch shorter than that but still dang good fish seeing as the only one we caught was 15". And yes, he went home with us and took a bath in some grease

wow,fileted ribbonfish…theres a first for everything! Guess you had a SHARP knife…

we were in Pawleys 2 weeks ago, and my daughter was wading with her little net and caught one of these, it attacked the orange kiddie net, she thought it was the coolest thing… I’ll have to get the pic from my wifes cell phone and post

Guess I’ve been missing out on some good eating!

i have seen certain ethnic groups keep coolers full of ribbon fish to eat. I have heard they were good to eat

When i was down at 2nd avenue pier there was a man that eats them. He caught a ton of them the few days i was down there. He said just cook em like you would a trout.

There’s enough of them out there right now.
