Accidentally posted this in the surf/pier forum, hopefully it is more appropriate here:
Hey all, will be heading to Garden City the week leading up to the 4th and the place we’re staying has a pier that goes out into the main creek channel in Murrells Inlet. Any chance of having some decent fishing? I’ve been reading a lot on here but have never pier or surf fished, only been on a few offshore charters. I also may try some surf fishing if it’s not so busy, there seems to be plenty of information out there as far as that goes.
Boat traffic gets VERY heavy in the main channel, especially the weeks around the 4th. Early mornings would be your best bet using either live finger mullet, mud minnows, or cut bait. You can always cross the street and head to the ocean side and fish the groins/jetties. Less boat traffic and broader range of species to catch.
I second all of that. If you want to fish MI, be up and on the water at 5:30 AM. You will have until about 9:30/10:00 to fish. Then you will be run off the water.
I figured it would be heavy boat traffic, even considered trying it at night but didn’t know if it would be any good. Also hope to get out on the surf for the first time ever.
If the traffic gets heavy, and depending on the tide, head south on Waccamaw dr until you hit dolphin st. That is the last public beach access before you hit a guard shack. Parking is very limited there if you get there after 9:00 am. There are groins there that are great to fish around. Take the paths between the groins to hit the north jetty of the inlet. either side of that long jetty going out is great for fishing. Boats hit it pretty heavy as well as the surf fishers. WATCH THE TIDE!!! It is impassible if the tide is rising or high as you get closer to the inlet.
