I just joined the smartphone generation so I am in need of advice/recommendations. I know I need some security app(s) on my new phone (Motorola Moto G - Thanks CapnTang) but other than that, what are some “must have” apps I should consider?
I have retired my steam-powered phone and now find myself having my 17 year old show me how to work a dang phone.
Thanks

radar now is a free simple to use weather app. It shows you the current radar for your location which is helpful when on the water. Another one I use when on the water is Marine Traffic. It shows you the container ships and gives you a little info on each ship. Comes in handy when people ask me “how big is that boat?”
Navionics ‘US East’. It turns it into a GPS/chart-plotter.
It is easily worth the $10. And, they recommend that you do the install when you can plug the phone into a charger and connect to a WiFi. Otherwise, it takes FOREVER to download. It is rather large as it includes the maps so you don’t need a cell signal to use it.

More important than security apps (I’ve never bothered with them), I would strongly recommend a PIN or pattern lock on the phone. You will likely have your email account (at least, perhaps also personal banking apps, etc) accessible on the device, so it’s best to keep that out of someone else’s hands should you lose the phone.
I like the DropBox app. It’s free to sign up for an account (click below to sign up and grab some bonus space), and it keeps my photos synced between my phone and all of my tablets and computers without ever having to directly connect the phone to anything.
Rainy Days on the Android platform…like Fritz said, a good radar app is where it’s at…
RedLaser scans and keeps all your customer loyalty cards, library cards, etc…
Navionics is worth the few bucks
theScore is a great sports app for scores, news, etc…
join Spotify for $10 per month and get the app on your phone, tablet, etc…
Pandora. If your car/truck stereo is bluetooth-capable, you can custom tailor the music you listen to. I absolutely love my Pandora. And it’s free. If you pay $4 a month, then you don’t have to listen to ads. There aren’t that many ads on the free version though.

Thanks guys, all good stuff. Kind of surprised at the no anti-virus thing but I know Capntang knows his stuff. Really enjoying the new phone. Best feature? Voice texting. No more typing…ho cool, cuz I type terribly.

I’ve got several weather apps on mine but I use RadarCast the most, it shows satellite predictions for 1, 10,20,30,40, and 50 minutes. Other apps I have are Garmin Blue Chart Mobile, Navionics, iNavX, and Google Earth. Also Fish Rules, Pure Gas for non-ethanol stations, River Data, IGFA, Boat US.
Find a good SOS app for the phone. It flashes the SOS Morse code and will send your current GPS location as text message to anyone you want.
others are:
Unit converter
Measure your land
Google Earth
Dual Level
Magnifier and or binoculars
You Tube
Dolphin and Mammal Stranding report app, and
The US Constitution app, has the entire thing
all of the above can be found as free apps, you just have to tolerate the ads.
Genius Scan. Free. Lets you take a pic of any size document, convert to PDF, and email or text. Totally not related to fishing but the best free app I have, with the exception of Voicy Light. That one lets me disguise my voice as a robot - strictly used to call my wife. Though she is unimpressed, I find it hilarious.
