My oldest 12yo “tween” hasn’t been too keen on fishing. He likes catchin but not fishin, if you get my drift. Last weekend I was practicing my fly rod casting and he wandered over. I asked him if he’d like to give it a try. Gave him some casting lessons and he did pretty good.
Since then he’s been asking if he can go practice and he took his brother’s rod out in the yard yesterday by himself. Today we went over to the golf course pond and … he got his first fish OTF. He was really excited! I was even more excited. Maybe this is what will stoke his interest…
Here is the proud fisherman and his catch
My youngest, the fisherman, tried some casts and was laying the line out like a natural with some pretty tight loops. He had a fish on and lost it! Good times!
Dad…nada but I got some good casting practice in.
I think I’m gonna bring the kids to the grass flats during the next 2 weeks and that should give them a crack fix like it has to me!!!
Good to hear. I hope they both get as gut hooked as I am. I am sure you are a proud papa.
“Fishing is alot like sex…when its good,it’s really good, and when its bad, its still pretty good.”
You, sir, are foul hooked. Optiker way to get the young ones out there! Fishing of course, but fly fishing most importantly. Maybe introducing them to the tailing reds at a young age will help them control their cravings as they mature, much like french children and wine.
The one in the pic wanted his own rod so we got another setup at Dicks “beginner flyfishing set”. I just rigged it up at lunch today so I’m sure we’ll be out at the ponds again tonite. Gonna try to get out on the flats this weekend with both of them.
