my first inshore snapper (grey)

i have never caught an inshore snapper but i have now! I have caught small gags inshore but not a snapper. I was unsure of the species but i think it s a grey snapper. let me know if i am wrong about the type of snapper.

Yup looks like a mangrove aka gray snapper. They go as shallow as grass flats its crazy

Nice, how shallow was he? Mangrove snapper are one of my favorite fish to eat. We catch the like crazy in FL but just moved up here and wasn’t sure if they made it this far north. Do you guys ever catch them around the harbor around bridges/rocks? Or maybe the jetties?

pretty much only find them that size inshore in the fall here- that’s a young-of-the-year that was probably transported inshore as an egg or larval fish, and has been loving life in our estuaries. same happens for YOY groupers here. i’ve even caught a baby snook in september in the harbor.

either they migrate offshore/south to warmer water in the fall, or they probably don’t survive to year 2 around here… a lot like our transient tarpon population.

I caught one about 12 inches long Monday before last in a creek up the Wando. Didnt know what it was but I’m glad to see someone else caught one too.

Pretty cool fish and I had a kid catch one on my boat today at the jetties.

Head off, scaled, scored, season, and fried whole. Eat the skin. Had to eat those guys for a good bit of time couldn’t afford beef!! Delicious!!

caught a couple of them in the cast net last week.
