My first kayak

Hello all, Merry Christmas. My wife got me a kayak for Christmas so I can get into the flats to catch some fish. It’s a future beach Trophy 126. anyone have any imput good or bad on this kayak? Thanks, hope to meet some of you on the water. Catch um up…Mike

Good luck! Have thought of trying kayak fishing, but probably would have to just be able to kayak first! Ha ha!

Be careful. The temptation will be to take it out ASAP. The water temp right now is straight up ugly to be out in a craft you are unfamiliar with. I would say don’t get too crazy and go too far and hopefully you have someone to go with. PFD if not EVERY time, certainly EVERY time at this time of year.

Hopefully some others will chime in to agree so I don’t sound like a “no fun old geezer”. An unexpected swim right now is very much a life threatening situation even if you are “properly prepared”.

That said, Merry Christmas! Enjoy the yak. It changed fishing forever for me.

sorry - thought I saw “new member” as the original poster, didn’t mean to carry on like you don’t know the waters cold.

No Problem Carolinablues, I appreciate the concern. I did take the yak out behind my neighbors house in the lake just to make sure it floated me good. I’ll probably try it out in the wando later this week if the air temps warm up, sticking very close to shore. I love to fish but not willing to die for it. LOL! I don’t care how experienced someone is. You always learn something new! Hope to meet you on the water someday! Merry Christmas!

don’t know about the trophy model specifically but i have the angler 160 sit on top and love it. quality seems pretty good and it floats. had mine for a couple of years now with no problems. enjoy and catch some fish.

got myself some neoprene chest waders form Hadrells for the cold water! Hopefully I won’t need them. LOL!

Always been curious…I have a beer gut. Would it be possible to get a good belt seal on waders like that? Right now I just wear neo boots.

I bought my son the same yak last year, it seemed like a pretty decent boat for a beginner and the cost was too good to pass up. I have paddled it a few times and it seems pretty easy to move around. All in all, it seems like a pretty good starter boat. My son likes his so much that he now wants me to get one so we can paddle around together.
