My fly fishing quest started back in February when the guys from Charleston Angler set me up with my first fly combo. From there I spent hours practicing casting and hanging around the angler and low country fly bugging the workers with question after question. I started walking flats around June not knowing what I was looking for etc etc. finally saw my first red on a flat then not long ago around the middle I saw my first tail and had my first hook up. One day about a month ago I walked into low country fly wanting tops on surf fishing this fall. I was given a few places to start, the beat fliea of choice and what to look for. Sitting around my apartment today I spooled up the weighted line and took off towards the surf. Right when I hit the beach I found a spot that looked promising but the tide hadn’t reached it. Fished up and down the surf just blind casting and enjoying the sunset. After the sun disappeared I walked back to my spot and decided to give it one last cast or two before leaving. I never saw once or him take it my fly and thought it was snagged until the line started taking off out of my hand. This fish was cutting deep into my backing… I finally slowed him down and started gaining some line back. He made a few short runs after that. The guys that had been spot tail fishing all day made their way over to give me a hand and couldnt believe it. Said they hadnt caught any all afternoon. I’ve been skydiving, backpacking the Everglades and am headed to CO in October, but I’ve never felt excitement and adrenalin like that before. I am still on cloud 9 as I write this. Hard work does pay off. Looking forward to hitting the surf all winter long. I’ll post pics when I get to a computer. Thanks again to the guys at Charleston Angler and Low Country Fly for making this dream a reality.
