A raised edge around it would contain your catch, and keep you from sliding your foot off of the side (no fun when it’s cold!!).
When I did my last one, I made a ridge around it all three sides, and placed some “scuppers” of sorts in the aft outboard corners to let the water drain OUT of the boat, and keep the catch IN the platform. Worked very well.
It’s built from 1/2 plywood…laid it on the gunnel and traced the shape from below to just over the bow half-rails, and be short
of the anchor locker. Used 2x4 around the underside with the 1x4 grid. Top is fiber glassed with a layer of cloth and non-skid in the paint.
Bottom grid is screwed and resin attached fiberglass tape around all the seams. Four glassed 1/2" holes along either side to tie it down
to the half rail or cleats. I like the idea of raising the sides a little (I can kick all the by catch right off of it now) and making water run off the sides. It’s sturdy enough for three guys to stand on, and you can drop an 8 foot net straight down into the basket. We built one for a friend’s Pioneer 197 and another friend’s 18’ Sea Hunt, so I’m always shrimping from a porch…;)) The black carpet is just bunk carpet to make it easy on the gel coat.
Laugh if you want…but I bought one of those rubber shower mats with suction cups for the bow of our boat…keeps my feet under me…also put one under the cooler…keeps it from sliding all over…another handy thing is the non skid pads you put under carpet or your rugs…cut it for the bottom of your boat…keeps the fiberglass from getting scratched up…can lift and shake the shrimp out into the cooler…or dump the trash on it over the side for easy boat clean up…also keeps feet and coolers from sliding around…and muffles cast net noise when dropped… Walmart and dollar general have them cheap…DOLLAR TREE. also has the shower mats and carpet pads but in smaller pieces. Another cheap dollar tree item…get the solar lights…stick them in your rod holders…cheap night lights and won’t run your battery down :)…they also have the packages of glow sticks to put on shrimp poles…or you could use some smaller solar lights on your .poles. Hope y’all catch them up this year…I might be out of the game due to back injury…I am sad…very sad
