Hit the water this morning about 6:30am. Headed out to the Jettys to see what was biting. Started off slow with a couple rays then about 8:30 the bite turned on. My Son Kyle hooked up with a runner ,peeling line like it was on free spool. After a 20 min fight we see leader nice size drum but just as we grabbed the net he spit the hook. Thats why its called fishing right?? So baited back up and slung it back out. About 30 mins later my rod screams set hook and fight is on.Get him netted, another nice drum measured 35"
drop him back in the water and with a mighty tail splash back to the deep for him. Not even 5 mins later rod screams again, Wife picks it up and after follow directions to a “T” Fish ON!! after a 20 min fight she boats her largest fish of her life
Hers measured 37" Again release with a mighty flip of the tail. Bait up again and get ready to do it again. Within 10 min rod zings again Kyle grabs it and begins his tug of war, after a short fight he lands his 35" drum
After a short 1 hr intermisson and tide swing rod screams again Kyle grabs it and battles his biggest fish so far he almost didnt fit in the net
42" we was joking that the drum gill plate is almost as big as Kyles head… All in all it was a great day . we went 4 for 5 on drums, 9 2 and 3 foot sharpnose sharks, 1 3 foot bonnet head,4 rays and 25+ whiting. Drum were all caught on fish finder rigs with cut whiting, water depth 21 ft temp 70.3

Thanks Guys… Penny all 4 reds fins were raw like that, reminded me of Largemouth bass when the come off the beds after spawning maybe the same here not sure.Jim,whitings were caught on almost anything we threw at them as long as it was small pieces shrimp, squid, cut mullet, small menhaden and cut whiting but seemed like the bigger ones hit squid the best.

Nice! Thanks for holding those redfish right as well
With a hand shoved up their gills… A for Effort to support the fish but a D- for execution…
Now I know all those fishermen out there who know how to hold a fish by the gill plates but the kids see it and the next time they catch a fish and wanna be like the “pros” shove their hands up the gills and kill fish… Remember that is like someone one shoving their hands down your throat and fondling your lungs…
If properly used a gill plate hold on a fish is no more harmful than holding by the bottom jaw. The key to both is in the way it is done.Lower jaw hold is fine as long as the jaw is not forced down as to keep the mouth open this cause too much pressure on the jaw and head. Gill plate hold slide fingers tightly against the gill plate making sure not to contact the gills them self apply pressure with the thumb to the outside of the plate.either method is fine and widely used. The key is to support the body in conjunction with either. I agree that anyone Kids And Adults should be taught proper ways to hold bigger fish.
