We had been planning a trip to the Keys this summer and had decided not to take the boat this time but take the kayaks instead. We already had 2 boats and had a means to carry 2 but but my wife wanted one so transporting three became an issue. I had an old jonboat trailer so I figured I could use it as a base.
I went from 8" tires to 12" and built a rack that can be bolted on and removed fairly easily. You can carry 1 - 4 boats by adding the tubes that hold the upper rack. For my first venture, I am pretty pleased.
Yes, the 2 horizontal supports for the upper rack are welded to 1.75" square tube that slides down into 2" tube. A hitch pin secures them. It’s probably over-engineered but I had fun building it.

Have an old frame sittin’ out back. Thanks for the inspiration to get off of my arse and do something with it. Plus if I build it to hold six, and I only have four, doesn’t that mean I need two more kayaks? Probably gonna have to polish that a bit before I try it on “wife number last”.
